JoSAA College Predictor for NITs 2026

Predict which NIT and branch you can get using your JEE Main rank, category and home state

Predicting NIT Seats Through JoSAA

All 31 NITs allot their undergraduate seats through JoSAA using JEE Main rank. Our JEE Main College Predictor is built on the full JoSAA 2026 seat matrix and cutoff data, letting you filter specifically to NIT results by rank, category, gender and home state.

The single biggest factor in NIT prediction accuracy is the home state quota. Since 50% of every NIT's seats are reserved for candidates from that NIT's home state, two candidates with the identical CRL rank can get very different results depending on whether they're applying under HS or OS quota at a given NIT.

For the full seat breakdown by institute, branch, quota and category, see our JoSAA Seat Matrix 2026. If you don't get your preferred NIT in the main rounds, review CSAB 2026 cutoffs for the special round that follows.

NIT Competitiveness Tiers — A Structural Overview

TierExample NITsGeneral Pattern for CSE
Tier 1Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Calicut, RourkelaTightest OS closing ranks; HS quota still competitive
Tier 2Jaipur (MNIT), Kurukshetra, Allahabad (MNNIT), Durgapur, Nagpur (VNIT)Moderately competitive; strong HS advantage
Tier 3 / NE NITsSilchar, Agartala, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, SikkimMost accessible; large HS vs OS cutoff gap

* Tiers reflect a consistent structural pattern seen across recent JoSAA cycles, not exact numeric cutoffs for the current year — always confirm specific closing ranks with the live predictor or official JoSAA data.

Building a Realistic NIT Choice List

A common mistake among JoSAA first-timers is filling a choice list that is either too narrow (only 5–6 dream colleges) or too broad without any order logic. A more effective approach is to run your rank through the predictor across all three quota types you're eligible for — Home State, Other State, and category-specific — and build your list in three bands: a handful of aspirational Tier-1 NIT branches at the top, a wider set of realistic Tier-2 options in the middle, and several safety-net Tier-3/NE-NIT or GFTI choices at the bottom.

Within each NIT, also compare branches rather than assuming CSE is always worth prioritizing over a better-ranked branch choice. For candidates with ranks that put Tier-1 NIT CSE out of reach but Tier-1 NIT ECE or Electrical in range, it's worth weighing a core branch at a more prestigious NIT against CSE at a lower-tier one — both are reasonable choices depending on long-term career goals, and the predictor can help quantify exactly how much rank gap separates the two options.

Frequently Asked Questions – JoSAA Predictor for NITs

Common questions about predicting NIT admission through JoSAA

1
Why does home state matter so much for NIT predictions?
NITs reserve 50% of their seats for Home State (HS) quota — candidates who completed Class 12 from that NIT's home state — and 50% for Other State (OS)/All India quota. HS cutoffs are often dramatically lower (better) than OS cutoffs for the same institute-branch, so entering your home state correctly is critical to an accurate prediction.
2
Which NITs are hardest to get into through JoSAA?
NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, NIT Rourkela and NIT Calicut are generally considered the most competitive 'Tier-1' NITs, with CSE and ECE closing at low (single-digit to low five-digit) CRL ranks under OS quota. Tier-2 and Tier-3 NITs offer more accessible cutoffs, especially in core branches.
3
Can OBC-NCL or SC/ST candidates use the same NIT predictor?
Yes. The predictor factors in your category directly — OBC-NCL, SC, ST and EWS all have separate reserved-seat cutoffs that are typically higher (more accessible) than the General/CRL cutoff for the same seat.
4
Does the NIT predictor account for female supernumerary seats?
Yes. NITs have an additional female supernumerary quota (over and above the base seats) to improve gender diversity. Selecting your gender in the predictor ensures you see these additional seats where applicable.
5
How many NITs are there and do all participate in JoSAA?
There are 31 NITs across India, and all of them participate in JoSAA counselling for undergraduate admissions, alongside IITs, IIITs and GFTIs.
6
How are NITs typically grouped by competitiveness for CSE?
Based on past JoSAA cycles, NITs are broadly grouped into three informal tiers for CSE: Tier-1 (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Calicut, Rourkela) with the tightest closing ranks; Tier-2 (Jaipur, Kurukshetra, Allahabad/MNNIT, Durgapur, Nagpur/VNIT) with moderately competitive cutoffs; and Tier-3/Northeast NITs (Silchar, Agartala, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim) which are considerably more accessible, especially for candidates using home state quota in that region.
7
What branches besides CSE are worth considering at NITs?
Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), Electrical Engineering, and Information Technology (where offered as a separate branch) typically follow CSE in competitiveness at most NITs. Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering are generally more accessible and still carry strong placement records in core industries and PSU recruitment, which many candidates underrate when fixating only on CSE.
8
Should I also register for CSAB if I don't get my preferred NIT in JoSAA?
Yes. CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) runs special rounds after JoSAA specifically to fill NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats that remain vacant — due to withdrawals, non-reporting, or newly created seats. If your JoSAA outcome isn't satisfactory, CSAB's special rounds are a legitimate next step with potentially different (sometimes more favourable) cutoffs for the same institutes.
9
How much does the NIT seat matrix (total intake) change year to year?
The total seat matrix across all 31 NITs has grown gradually over recent years as new branches and supernumerary seats (such as female and PwD quota additions) have been introduced at various institutes. This means closing ranks are not purely a function of difficulty — a modest increase in total seats can also make a given NIT-branch combination slightly more accessible than the previous year, even if the exam itself was equally competitive.
