Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about marks, percentile, normalization, and how to use rank prediction for counselling.

1
How accurate is this JEE Main rank predictor?
This tool gives an estimate using historical marks↔percentile↔rank trends and a difficulty adjustment band. Actual JEE Main ranks depend on NTA normalization, shift difficulty, number of test takers, and how others performed in your shift. Use this as a planning tool, not a guarantee.
2
Should I enter marks or percentile?
If you already have an expected percentile (or the response sheet analysis gives you a strong estimate), percentile input is usually more stable. If you only know marks, use marks mode and select the right difficulty for your shift to get a realistic band.
3
What is CRL rank vs category rank?
CRL (Common Rank List) is the main all-India merit list used for most seat allocation logic. Category rank is your position within a specific reserved category list. Colleges and branches typically publish closing ranks in CRL and category lists depending on quota and reservation.
4
Can I predict NIT/IIIT/GFTI colleges from this rank?
Yes. After getting a rank range, use our JEE Main College Predictor to filter by category, home state quota, and gender to see realistic NIT/IIIT/GFTI options based on past JoSAA cutoffs.
5
Why do ranks change for the same marks across shifts?
JEE Main is conducted in multiple shifts and NTA uses normalization to convert raw scores to percentiles. If a shift is easier, more students score higher and the same marks can translate to a worse percentile/rank compared to a harder shift.
6
What is a good rank in JEE Main for NITs?
For General category Other State, rank under 20,000 can get you good NITs and branches. Rank under 10,000 opens top NITs like Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal for popular branches. Home state quota has significantly lower cutoffs.
7
How is percentile different from percentage?
Percentage is your marks out of 300. Percentile is your position relative to all test takers - it tells what percentage of students scored below you. 99 percentile means you scored better than 99% of candidates. Admissions use percentile/percentile-based rank, not raw percentage.
8
Can I improve my rank after appearing in both sessions?
Yes! If you appear in both January and April sessions, your best score will be considered for rank preparation. This gives you an opportunity to improve your performance and rank. The final merit list uses the best of the two NTA scores.
