What Is Seat Type in JoSAA 2027?
OPEN, Home State, Other State, Supernumerary, PwD — what each quota classification means.
Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 has not begun and no 2027 seat matrix exists as of October 2026. The seat type classifications explained below are stable, structural features of JoSAA's seat matrix and are expected to carry over unchanged to 2027 — only exact 2027 seat counts per type remain unconfirmed.
Common Seat Types in JoSAA
OPEN: No home-state restriction; available competitively within the category to candidates from any state.
HS (Home State): Reserved for candidates whose home state matches the institute's state — applies mainly to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
OS (Other State): For candidates from a state other than the institute's home state, competing for the remaining share of seats at that institute.
Female Supernumerary: Extra IIT seats created above regular intake to help reach ~20% female enrollment per branch.
PwD: Seats reserved for candidates with benchmark disabilities, as per applicable reservation norms.
How Seat Type Affects Your Choice List
When filling choices, candidates typically see multiple seat-type variants of the same institute-branch combination — for example, "NIT Trichy CSE — HS" and "NIT Trichy CSE — OS" appear as separate choices. You should rank the seat type you're eligible for and most likely to get favorably (usually HS, if applicable to you) appropriately within your list, since HS seats often have less competitive closing ranks than OS seats for the same branch.
