JoSAA 2027 Home State Quota — How It Works

The stable 50/50 Home State vs Other State seat split at NITs, explained

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 has not begun and no official seat matrix exists as of October 2026. The 50/50 HS/OS split described here is a long-standing, stable mechanism — exact 2027 seat counts and closing ranks will only be known once JoSAA publishes 2027 data.

The 50/50 Mechanism

Every NIT reserves exactly 50% of its seats, per programme, for candidates whose "home state" matches the state where that NIT is physically located. The remaining 50% is open to candidates from anywhere in India under Other State (OS) quota. This split was introduced to ensure every state has guaranteed representation at its local NIT and has remained structurally unchanged for many cycles.

You do not apply separately for HS or OS — JoSAA automatically evaluates your rank against the correct quota for each NIT based on your determined home state, within the single unified choice-filling process.

How Your Home State Is Determined

  • Generally based on the state where you passed your Class 12 (or equivalent) qualifying examination.
  • NOT based on your family's native state or where you currently reside, unless that's also where you studied Class 12.
  • Special provisions typically exist for children of central government employees, defence personnel, and public sector undertaking employees on transferable postings — verify specific 2027 rules once published.
  • If you studied Class 12 outside India, special rules apply — check the official brochure for the exact process.

Why HS Quota Often Has More Accessible Ranks

Because HS quota draws candidates only from within a single state, the applicant pool is naturally smaller than the all-India OS pool. This has historically meant HS closing ranks are more accessible than OS closing ranks for the same programme — particularly pronounced at NITs located in states with a smaller number of JEE Main aspirants. This pattern has held consistently across past cycles and is expected to continue into 2027, though exact numbers will vary.

JoSAA 2027 Home State Quota – FAQs

Common questions about the NIT home-state quota mechanism

1
What is the home state quota at NITs?
Each NIT reserves 50% of its seats per programme for Home State (HS) candidates — those domiciled in the state where that NIT is located — and the remaining 50% for Other State (OS) candidates from anywhere in India. This 50/50 split has been a stable, long-standing JoSAA mechanism and is expected to continue unchanged for 2027.
2
How is my 'home state' determined for JoSAA 2027?
Home state is typically based on where you passed your Class 12 (or equivalent qualifying) examination, not necessarily where you currently live or where your family originates from — this has been the consistent rule across past cycles. Some exceptions apply for children of central government/defence personnel on transferable jobs. Confirm the exact 2027 rule in that year's brochure.
3
Do home state candidates get an advantage in closing ranks?
Yes, typically — because HS quota draws from a smaller pool of candidates domiciled in that specific state, HS closing ranks have historically been more accessible (higher/worse numerically, meaning easier to qualify for) than OS closing ranks for the same programme at most NITs, especially for NITs in less populous states.
4
Can I choose to apply only under Other State quota even if NIT is in my home state?
No — JoSAA has automatically classified candidates into HS or OS for each NIT based on your determined home state; you don't get to opt out of your correct classification. You are evaluated under HS for NITs in your home state and OS for all others, simultaneously, within the same choice list.
5
Does the home state quota apply at IITs, IIITs, and GFTIs too?
No — the Home State/Other State quota split is specific to NITs. IITs do not have this distinction (they use a unified all-India merit list). Some IIITs and GFTIs do apply a similar home-state-based mechanism, but the structure and percentage can differ from the NIT 50/50 rule — check the relevant institute's seat matrix for its specific policy.
