JoSAA 2027: Home State vs Other State Seats

Key differences between HS and OS quota at NITs, side by side

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 has not begun and no official seat matrix exists as of October 2026. The HS/OS structure described here is a long-standing, stable mechanism — exact 2027 figures will only be known once JoSAA publishes 2027 data.

Strategic Takeaways

  • Always check your HS NIT first — the more accessible closing rank there can make it your most realistic top-tier option.
  • Don't assume all NITs outside your state are equally competitive — OS closing ranks vary significantly by NIT reputation and location.
  • Your home state is fixed for the cycle — there's no way to 'switch' which NIT counts as your HS option.
  • Add both HS and OS choices across multiple NITs to maximize your options within your rank range.

JoSAA 2027 HS vs OS Seats – FAQs

Common questions comparing Home State and Other State quota

1
What's the core difference between HS and OS seats?
Home State (HS) seats are reserved for candidates domiciled in the state where that specific NIT is located; Other State (OS) seats are open to candidates from anywhere in India. Each NIT programme splits its seats 50/50 between the two, a structure that has remained stable across past cycles.
2
Which quota should I apply under — do I get to choose?
No, you don't choose — JoSAA automatically evaluates you under the correct quota for each NIT based on your determined home state. For NITs in your home state, you're evaluated under HS; for all other NITs, you're evaluated under OS, simultaneously within the same choice list.
3
Are HS and OS closing ranks usually very different?
Often yes, especially at NITs in states with a smaller pool of JEE Main aspirants — HS quota draws from a much smaller applicant base than the all-India OS pool, so HS closing ranks are frequently more accessible. The gap size varies significantly by state and programme, and exact 2027 figures will only be available after that year's allotment.
4
Does applying as OS reduce my chances compared to a local HS candidate?
Not in an unfair sense — it simply means you're competing against the much larger all-India applicant pool for that NIT's OS seats, rather than the smaller in-state pool. Both HS and OS candidates compete fairly within their respective quota using the same JEE Main rank-based merit system.
5
Can OS candidates also apply to NITs outside their state as 'their' HS NIT?
No — each candidate has exactly one determined home state, and consequently exactly one NIT (or set of NITs in that state) where they qualify as HS. At every other NIT, they are automatically OS, regardless of how many states' NITs they add to their choice list.
