JoSAA 2027 Round 4 – Later-Stage Counselling Explained

Slowing Movement · Leftover-Seat Handling · Decision Points

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 Round 4 dates are not yet published. This page explains the stable later-stage counselling process from past cycles (2024–2026) as an evergreen guide. The total number of rounds for 2027 isn't known — 2025 had 6 rounds, 2026 had 5. Verify specifics at josaa.nic.in once released.

Round 4: Later-Stage Counselling

Round 4 continues the same rank-based matching mechanism used throughout JoSAA — recalculating vacated seats and re-checking Floating/Sliding candidates against their locked choice lists. By this stage in past cycles, the pace of upgrades has generally slowed for most candidates as the applicant pool and seat matrix stabilize.

Whether Round 4 is an early, middle, or near-final round for 2027 depends entirely on the total number of rounds that year's cycle has — a figure JoSAA sets based on seat-filling progress, not a fixed number repeated every year.

What Typically Happens in Round 4

  1. 1

    Vacancy Recalculation

Seats freed from Round 3 (withdrawals, non-reporting, upgrades-out) are re-tallied.

  2. 2

    Re-matching Continues

Floating/Sliding candidates checked for upgrades; new allotments possible for unallotted candidates.

  3. 3

    Result Published

Candidates see their Round 4 status — upgraded, unchanged, or newly allotted.

  4. 4

    Response Window

Freeze, Float, or Slide as per your priorities at this stage.

  5. 5

    Reporting / Confirmation

Complete any required reporting steps to keep your seat valid for the next round.

Tips for Round 4

  • Reassess whether continuing to Float is worth it given how little movement you've seen so far.
  • Watch for official announcements about the total number of rounds for that year's cycle.
  • If your branch/institute is a popular combination, some late movement is still possible — don't assume it's fully settled.
  • Prepare for the possibility of moving to CSAB if seats remain unfilled after JoSAA's rounds conclude.

1
When is JoSAA 2027 Round 4?
Not known yet — JoSAA has not released a 2027 schedule as of October 2026. In recent cycles, Round 4 has followed Round 3 by roughly a week, but the exact 2027 timing is unconfirmed.
2
Is Round 4 the last round in JoSAA?
Not necessarily. The total number of rounds has varied by year — 2025 had 6 rounds, 2026 had 5. Round 4 is simply a later-stage round; whether it is the second-last, last, or mid-stage round for 2027 depends on how many total rounds that cycle ends up having, which is not yet known.
3
Does movement slow down by Round 4?
Generally, yes — by Round 4, most candidates who wanted to Float for upgrades have often already settled into a seat they're satisfied with, or movement has become marginal for many branches. However, popular branches at sought-after institutes can still see some churn due to withdrawals. This pattern has repeated across years but isn't guaranteed.
4
What happens to seats that remain vacant after Round 4?
If seats remain vacant after the main JoSAA rounds conclude, they are typically handled either in further JoSAA special/spot rounds (if scheduled) or transferred to CSAB for its special rounds, depending on the institute category. This handoff structure (JoSAA to CSAB for leftover seats) has been consistent in recent years.
5
Should I Freeze by Round 4 if I'm satisfied with my seat?
Many candidates choose to Freeze once satisfied to avoid any administrative risk from continuing to Float, such as missing a response deadline. This is a personal risk-trade-off rather than a rule — Floating costs nothing structurally except the ongoing requirement to respond each round.
6
How did JoSAA 2025 and JoSAA 2026 Round 4 compare in terms of movement?
In JoSAA 2025 (a 6-round cycle), Round 4 was a mid-stage round with meaningful movement still happening for several NIT branches. In JoSAA 2026 (a 5-round cycle), Round 4 was the second-to-last round, closer to the final settling stage, with less overall movement remaining compared to JoSAA 2025's Round 4. This difference illustrates why Round 4's significance depends entirely on the total number of rounds that cycle has.
7
What is the typical fee payment deadline after a Round 4 allotment?
Based on the pattern followed in recent cycles, candidates have typically had a short window — often around 2-3 days — after each round's result to pay the seat acceptance fee and respond with Freeze, Float, or Slide, though exact deadlines are set and published separately for each round. Missing this deadline in any round, including Round 4, generally results in forfeiting that round's allotment.
8
Can my allotment get worse in Round 4 compared to Round 3?
No — JoSAA's algorithm is designed so that once you're allotted a seat and choose Float or Slide, you can only move to an equal-or-better position on your choice list in subsequent rounds, never a worse one. If you don't get upgraded in Round 4, you simply retain your prior allotment; you cannot be downgraded.
9
Is it common to get a completely new allotment in Round 4 if I had none before?
Yes — candidates who remained unallotted through Rounds 1-3 are automatically re-evaluated in Round 4 against their current choice list and the latest vacancy position, and can receive a fresh allotment if their rank now matches an available seat. This automatic re-evaluation happens every round without requiring any extra action from the candidate, as long as their choices remain active.
