JoSAA 2027 Round 2 – How Upgrades Work After Round 1

Float & Slide Upgrades · Protection Against Downgrade · Reporting Again

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 Round 2 dates are not yet published. This page explains the stable Round 2 upgrade mechanism used in past cycles (2024–2026) as an evergreen process guide. The exact number of rounds for 2027 isn't known yet — 2025 had 6 rounds, 2026 had 5. Confirm specifics at josaa.nic.in once released.

Round 2: The First Upgrade Round

Round 2 re-runs the allotment algorithm using updated seat availability — some seats vacate because candidates withdrew, didn't report, or upgraded out of them, and these open up for candidates still in the pool (those who chose Float or Slide in Round 1).

This progressive-upgrade mechanism, where your position can only improve or stay the same across rounds, has been a defining and stable feature of JoSAA since the joint-seat-allocation system began. It is not expected to change structurally for 2027, even though exact dates and seat numbers will differ.

What Happens in Round 2 (Expected)

  1. 1

Seats Vacated From Round 1 Are Recalculated

JoSAA tallies non-reporting, withdrawals, and upgrades-out to refresh seat availability.

  2. 2

    Floating/Sliding Candidates Are Re-matched

The algorithm checks if any higher choice on your list is now available at your rank.

  3. 3

    Result Published

You see either an upgraded seat, the same seat retained, or (rarely) a first allotment if you weren't allotted in Round 1.

  4. 4

    Respond Again

Choose Freeze, Float, or Slide again based on your updated allotment.

  5. 5

Complete Reporting for the New/Confirmed Seat

Follow the reporting steps published for Round 2 to keep your seat valid.

Tips for Round 2

  • Don't panic if your seat doesn't change — it simply means no better option opened up yet for your rank.
  • Keep Floating if you have genuine aspirational choices still above your current seat.
  • If satisfied with your current seat, Freeze to avoid the risk of losing a reporting deadline in later rounds.
  • Track rounds closely — missing a response/reporting deadline can risk forfeiting your seat.

Open guide
1
When is JoSAA 2027 Round 2?
Not known yet. As of October 2026, no 2027 schedule has been released. Round 2 has historically followed Round 1 by about a week in recent cycles, but the exact 2027 gap is unconfirmed.
2
Who is eligible for a Round 2 upgrade?
Candidates who chose Float or Slide after Round 1 remain in the matching pool for Round 2 and can be allotted a seat higher in their choice list (an upgrade) if one becomes available. Candidates who Froze in Round 1 exit the process and are not considered in Round 2. This structure has been stable across all recent cycles.
3
Can my Round 2 seat be worse than my Round 1 seat?
No — this has been a consistent protection in the JoSAA algorithm: once allotted a seat, a Floating or Sliding candidate can only be moved to an equal or higher-preference choice in later rounds, never a lower one. If no better seat is available, you simply retain your current allotment.
4
Do I need to pay fees again in Round 2?
If your seat changes (an upgrade), you typically go through the acceptance/reporting process again for the new seat. If your seat remains unchanged from Round 1, in most past cycles no fresh fee payment is required, but you should always check the specific instructions published for that round.
5
How many total rounds does JoSAA run?
This varies year to year — 2025 had 6 rounds while 2026 had 5. The exact number of rounds for JoSAA 2027 is not yet known and will depend on how quickly seats fill up and vacate across the cycle. Round 2 is simply the second of however many rounds 2027 ends up having.
