JoSAA 2027 Defense (DS) Category Guide

How supernumerary seats for children of defense personnel are expected to work, based on the stable mechanism JoSAA has used for years.

JoSAA 2027 has not begun. As of October 2026, JEE Advanced 2027 has not been conducted and the JoSAA 2027 Information Brochure has not been released. No official dates, seat counts, or certificate formats for 2027 exist yet. This page explains the DS category mechanism as it has worked in recent years (including JoSAA 2026) so you can prepare — not as confirmed 2027 figures.

What Is DS Category — The Evergreen Mechanism

The DS (Defense Services) category creates supernumerary seats at IITs and NITs for children of defense personnel who were killed or permanently disabled in action. These seats sit above the regular sanctioned intake and do not displace any other candidate — a structural design that has remained consistent across JoSAA counselling cycles for years and is reasonably expected to continue in 2027.

Unlike percentage-based reservations (SC, OBC, EWS), DS is a small, fixed number of seats per institute per branch — historically 1–2 seats. This number is set by each institute's governing council, and the JoSAA 2027 figure will only be confirmed once that year's official seat matrix is published.

Expected Certificate Requirements

Based on the pattern used in JoSAA 2026 and earlier years, the DS certificate is expected to require issuance by competent military authority:

Indian Army

Expected issuing authority: Commanding Officer (CO) or the unit's Record Office

Indian Navy

Expected issuing authority: Commanding Officer of the naval establishment

Indian Air Force

Expected issuing authority: Station Commander or Air Force Records Office

Exact 2027 certificate formats and validity rules will be confirmed only once the JoSAA 2027 brochure releases. Begin collecting documents early regardless, since military certificates can take weeks to process.

How to Prepare Ahead of JoSAA 2027

  1. Confirm eligibility against the DS conditions used in the most recent brochure (JoSAA 2026) as a working reference.
  2. Start the certificate request process with the relevant Record Office well before JEE Advanced 2027 results, since processing can take weeks.
  3. Watch josaa.nic.in for the JoSAA 2027 brochure release and re-verify every detail on this page against it.
  4. Once seat allotment data is published, use a college predictor to gauge realistic options across your category combinations.

1
Will DS category exist in JoSAA 2027?
The DS (Defense Services) supernumerary category has been a stable feature of JoSAA counselling for several years, so it is reasonably expected to continue in JoSAA 2027. However, JoSAA 2027 has not started as of October 2026, and the official information brochure — the only authoritative source for that year's exact rules — has not been released. Treat this page as a guide to the mechanism, not a confirmation that 2027 rules will be identical.
2
Who is likely to be eligible for DS category in JoSAA 2027?
Based on the pattern used in recent years including JoSAA 2026, DS eligibility is expected to remain limited to children of defense personnel who were killed in action, died of injuries sustained in action, or were permanently disabled in action. The exact wording and any additions (such as peacetime service provisions) will only be confirmed once JoSAA publishes the 2027 brochure.
3
What certificate will be needed for DS category in JoSAA 2027?
Historically, the DS certificate must be issued by a competent military authority — the Commanding Officer or Record Office for Army personnel, the Commanding Officer of the naval establishment for Navy, and the Station Commander or Air Force Records Office for Air Force. Candidates should expect a similar requirement for 2027 but must verify the exact format against the JoSAA 2027 brochure once released.
4
Are DS seats supernumerary — over and above regular intake?
Yes, in every year DS seats have been supernumerary, meaning they are created above the regular sanctioned intake and do not displace any regular candidate. This structural feature is expected to carry forward into JoSAA 2027, though the exact number of DS seats per institute/branch for 2027 will only be known from the official seat matrix.
5
How competitive are DS category seats expected to be in 2027?
Historically, DS seats are extremely low in number (typically 1–2 per branch per institute) and attract very few eligible candidates, so competition within the DS pool has traditionally been minimal, with seats sometimes going unfilled. There is no reason to expect this pattern to change materially for 2027, but exact closing ranks can only be determined after JoSAA 2027 allotment rounds are conducted.
6
When will official JoSAA 2027 DS category rules be published?
Official DS category rules for JoSAA 2027 will be published in the JoSAA 2027 Information Brochure, typically released shortly before registration opens. Based on past years' patterns, this would likely be a few weeks after JEE Advanced 2027 results, but the exact date is not yet announced — always confirm on josaa.nic.in.
