What is Slide Option in JoSAA 2026? – Complete Explanation

Slide is the JoSAA option for internal branch upgrades within the same college. Unlike Float (which tries for different colleges) or Freeze (which locks your current allotment), Slide specifically targets better branches at your current allotted college.

Example: You are allotted NIT Warangal ECE in Round 2. You had filled NIT Warangal CSE as a higher preference in your list. Choosing Slide in Round 3 tells JoSAA: "I want to stay at NIT Warangal but try for CSE. If CSE opens, give me CSE. If not, keep me in ECE." If a CSE seat opens (due to a candidate with better rank choosing IIT instead), you get upgraded to NIT Warangal CSE. If not, you retain NIT Warangal ECE.

Effective Slide strategy: If you are allotted your second-choice branch at a top NIT (e.g., NIT Trichy ECE when you wanted CSE), always choose Slide in the next round. As higher-ranked candidates get their IIT preferences and vacate NIT Trichy CSE, those seats become available for Slide candidates. The Slide algorithm is a significant advantage — many students get their preferred branch through Slide in Rounds 3–5.

Important: Slide only works for branches at your current college that are HIGHER in your preference list. If you want a completely different college, use Float instead.
