JoSAA 2026

JoSAA 2026 – Is Online Reporting Enough or Must I Visit the Institute?

Both steps are mandatory. Online reporting on josaa.nic.in and physical reporting at the institute are two separate, compulsory requirements.

The Clear Answer

Online reporting on josaa.nic.in is NOT enough on its own. You must also physically report to your allotted institute. Both are mandatory. Skipping either one will result in your seat being cancelled.

The confusion stems partly from COVID-era policies (2020–2021) when physical reporting was temporarily suspended and students could complete admission remotely. Those were exceptional circumstances. Since 2022, both online and physical reporting are again mandatory components of the JoSAA admission process.

Think of it this way: online reporting is your reservation of intent — it tells JoSAA you want the seat and you've paid for it. Physical reporting is the actual enrollment — it's when the institute formally records you as a student, verifies your identity with original documents, and assigns you a student registration number.

Online Reporting: What It Covers

1

Log in to josaa.nic.in

Use your JEE Main/Advanced application number and password.

2

View Allotment Result

Check allotted institute, branch, and category. Download the provisional allotment letter.

3

Pay Seat Acceptance Fee

Pay ₹35,000 (Gen/OBC) or ₹15,000 (SC/ST/PwD) via online banking.

4

Choose Freeze / Float / Slide

Select your response to the allotment. This determines whether you participate in future rounds.

5

Upload Documents

Upload scanned copies of all required documents (marksheets, category certificate, photo ID, etc.).

6

Download Confirmation

Download and save the fee payment receipt and document submission confirmation.

Timeline: Online reporting typically happens within 48–72 hours of seat allotment. Complete all steps well before the portal deadline.

Physical Reporting: What It Covers

1

Travel to Allotted Institute

Arrive on or before the physical reporting deadline published on josaa.nic.in and your allotment letter.

2

Present Original Documents

Submit originals of all documents: marksheets, category certificate, JoSAA allotment letter, fee receipt, photographs.

3

Document Verification by Institute

Institute officials physically verify originals against the copies you uploaded online. Any mismatch must be resolved here.

4

Biometric Registration

Your fingerprint and photograph are captured and linked to your roll number. Mandatory and non-delegatable.

5

Pay Remaining Institute Fees

Pay the balance of semester/annual fees directly to the institute. Bring a cheque or use institute's online fee portal.

6

Collect Student ID & Hostel Details

Receive your student ID card, hostel allotment information, and orientation schedule.

Timeline: Physical reporting deadline is usually 7–14 days after your final allotment. The exact date is on josaa.nic.in and your allotment letter.

Consequences of Completing Only One Step

Only Online, No Physical Reporting

The institute considers you absent. Your seat is cancelled by the institute. You lose the seat acceptance fee. The seat is reallocated. No recovery possible after the deadline.

Physical Visit Without Online Reporting (Very Rare Scenario)

Without completing the online portal steps (fee payment, document upload), the system has no record of your intent to join. Physical presence alone is insufficient. The institute cannot process your admission without the online portal confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JoSAA online and physical reporting requirements

1
Is online reporting on josaa.nic.in enough for JoSAA 2026?
No — online reporting on the JoSAA portal (document upload and fee payment) is only the first step. You must also physically report to the allotted institute for in-person document verification. Both steps are mandatory. Completing only online reporting does not confirm your admission — physical reporting finalises your enrollment.
2
What is the difference between online and physical reporting in JoSAA?
Online reporting (on josaa.nic.in) involves: paying the seat acceptance fee, uploading scanned copies of required documents, selecting Freeze/Float/Slide, and downloading the allotment letter. Physical reporting (at the allotted institute) involves: presenting original documents for verification by institute officials, biometric registration, paying remaining institute fees, and completing hostel/medical formalities in person.
3
What happens if I only do online reporting but don't go to the institute?
Completing only online reporting without physical reporting means the institute does not recognise you as enrolled. Your seat will eventually be cancelled by the institute, and you will lose the seat acceptance fee. The allotment letter alone does not constitute enrollment — you must appear in person.
4
Was online-only reporting ever allowed in JoSAA?
Yes — during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021), JoSAA allowed provisional online-only admissions where students could join without immediate physical reporting. Physical verification was deferred to later. This was a temporary exception and does not apply to JoSAA 2026. All students must physically report to their allotted institutes under the current (post-COVID) framework.
5
Can a parent or guardian go for physical reporting on my behalf?
No — physical reporting is a personal requirement. The student must be present for biometric registration, photograph, and document verification. No proxy attendance is accepted. If you have a medical emergency preventing personal attendance, contact the institute admission office immediately — some institutes may make documented exceptions, but this is not guaranteed.
