JoSAA 2026 Internal Sliding – What Is the Slide Option?
The Slide option is JoSAA's way of letting you upgrade your branch while staying at the same institute. Misunderstanding it can cost you a better programme at your preferred college.
The Three Options: Freeze, Float, and Slide
After each round's seat allotment in JoSAA 2026, every allotted candidate must respond with one of three options before the deadline. Understanding these correctly is essential — choosing the wrong one can either lock you into a suboptimal seat or move you to an institute you do not want.
FREEZE
Accept the allotted seat permanently. No further upgrade attempts. Your admission is confirmed at this institute and branch. Freeze is irreversible — once chosen, you cannot change it in subsequent rounds.
Use when: You are completely satisfied with your current allotment.
FLOAT
Accept the current seat and be reconsidered for any higher-preference choice in your locked list — including choices at entirely different institutes. If a better option opens, you get it and lose your current seat.
Use when: You are open to moving to a different institute for a better deal.
SLIDE
Accept the current seat and be reconsidered only for higher-preference choices at the SAME institute. You will not move to a different institute. Only a branch/programme upgrade within the same college is attempted.
Use when: You like the institute but want to try for a better branch there.
How Internal Sliding Works: Step-by-Step Example
Here is a concrete example to understand how the Slide option works in practice:
Scenario:
- Your locked choice list (partial):
- Choice 3: NIT Trichy CSE
- Choice 4: NIT Trichy ECE
- Choice 5: NIT Warangal CSE
- Choice 8: NIT Surathkal CSE
- Round 1 allotment: NIT Trichy ECE (Choice 4)
- 1
You choose Slide after Round 1.
This means: try to upgrade me, but only within NIT Trichy. Do not move me to NIT Warangal or NIT Surathkal.
- 2
JoSAA's Round 2 algorithm checks:
Is there a seat in NIT Trichy CSE (Choice 3) available for a candidate with my rank? If yes, you get it. If no, you keep NIT Trichy ECE.
- 3
Outcome A — Upgraded:
You move from NIT Trichy ECE to NIT Trichy CSE. You now have a higher-preference seat at the same institute. Decide whether to Freeze or Slide again.
- 4
Outcome B — Not Upgraded:
NIT Trichy CSE was not available. You keep NIT Trichy ECE. In Round 3, you can Slide again, Float (to include NIT Warangal CSE), or Freeze.
Key rule:
Slide only works if you have a higher-preference choice at the SAME institute in your locked list. If NIT Trichy CSE is not in your choice list at all, Slide has nothing to try and is essentially equivalent to Freeze.
Slide vs Float: Which One Should You Choose?
| Situation | Best Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Happy with institute, want better branch there | SLIDE | Limits upgrade scope to same institute; safe |
| Want to try a completely different, better institute | FLOAT | Widens upgrade to all higher choices |
| Completely satisfied with current allotment | FREEZE | Locks in the seat permanently |
| Got a backup NIT, want IIT if possible | FLOAT | IIT is a different institute — Float needed |
| Got NIT Trichy ECE, want NIT Trichy CSE only | SLIDE | Same institute, better branch — Slide is perfect |
| Got IIT Patna CSE, want IIT Bombay CSE | FLOAT | Different institute — only Float can do this |
