What to Do During the Wait Between Rounds

Why the Process Takes as Long as It Does
It's fair to wonder why seat allotment can't happen instantly given that it's a computerized rank-matching process — after all, the actual algorithm that matches ranks to choices runs in minutes, not weeks. The length of JoSAA comes from the deliberate multi-round design, not the technical matching itself. Each round exists to give candidates a genuine opportunity to move up to a more preferred choice as seats vacate through withdrawals and upgrades higher in the rank order — a single-round, take-it-or-leave-it system would be faster but would leave far more candidates stuck in a suboptimal allotment with no path to improve it. The multi-round float/slide mechanism, spread across roughly five to six allotment cycles, is what lets the system settle into a stable, largely optimal outcome for the vast majority of candidates, at the cost of taking several weeks rather than a single day.
Physical reporting adds further time because document verification genuinely requires in-person presence at (or coordination with) the allotted institute in most cases — a step that can't be fully compressed regardless of how fast the digital process is. And the CSAB phase that often follows exists specifically to mop up the seats that remain vacant even after JoSAA's rounds are exhausted, giving another chance to candidates who withdrew, were never allotted, or want a different NIT/IIIT/GFTI option.
