Why You Should Start Filling Choices Immediately

The choice filling window is only 5–7 days — shorter than it sounds when you consider the complexity of researching 100+ college-branch combinations. Here is why early start matters:

  • Research time: You need to look up closing ranks for each branch at each institute across multiple years. This takes significant time.
  • Mock allotment feedback: The mock allotment (available mid-window) gives you critical feedback. You need to have a complete initial list before the mock allotment runs, then refine after seeing results.
  • Peer comparison: Your friends and peers are filling choices simultaneously. The mock allotment reflects competition pressure in real time.
  • Portal stability: josaa.nic.in typically experiences high traffic. Starting early avoids last-day technical issues and server slowdowns.

Tip: Prepare a spreadsheet of your preferred college-branch combinations with 3-year closing rank data BEFORE the choice filling window opens. When it opens, you can input choices quickly without scrambling.

How to Use Mock Allotment to Refine Choices

The mock allotment is arguably the most valuable tool in the choice filling process. After Mock 1 results:

  1. Check if your mock allotment result is a seat you are happy with.
  2. If yes — ensure you have enough choices above it for upgrade attempts via Float.
  3. If no (not allotted, or allotted something you do not want) — add more choices, especially in the rank range that got you the mock allotment.
  4. Add safety net choices below your mock allotment to ensure you get SOMETHING in Round 1.
  5. Check mock allotment 2 after edits to confirm the changes had the expected effect.
1
Can I fill choices before JoSAA registration opens?
No — you must first register on josaa.nic.in, and only after registration is complete can you access the choice filling portal. Registration and choice filling are sequential steps. Registration typically opens 2–3 days after JEE Advanced results, and choice filling opens 2–3 days after registration starts.
2
How long do I have to fill choices in JoSAA?
The choice filling window typically spans 5–7 days from when it opens to the final lock deadline. This includes the mock allotment phase in the middle. Use the full window — start filling on Day 1 but keep refining based on mock allotment results. Do not wait until the last day.
3
What happens if I miss the choice filling deadline?
If you do not lock your choices before the deadline, your choices are not submitted for that round's allotment. You may be able to participate in later rounds if you complete the process, but missing the initial deadline significantly reduces your chances in Round 1. Always treat the deadline as hard.
4
Are choices the same in all 6 JoSAA rounds?
No — between rounds, you can modify your choice list (add, remove, reorder). Each allotment round uses the most recently submitted/locked choice list. However, you cannot make changes DURING a round (after the lock deadline until the next round's response window opens).
5
Is the mock allotment result official?
No — the mock allotment is a simulation to help you see where your choices stand given your rank and current seat availability. It is not binding. The actual Round 1 allotment uses the final locked choice list submitted by all candidates. Use mock results to refine your choices, not as final confirmation.
