Mock Allotment

JoSAA 2026 – Can I Update Choices After Mock Allotment?

Yes — mock allotments exist specifically for this. Add, remove, and reorder choices between Mock 1, Mock 2, and the final lock deadline

YES — You Can Absolutely Edit After Mock Allotment

Mock allotments are designed exactly for this purpose. You have full editing freedom until the final lock deadline.

The JoSAA choice filling timeline explicitly includes mock allotments as a feedback mechanism. After each mock result, you can:

  • Add new choices you had not considered before
  • Remove choices that are clearly out of your rank range
  • Reorder choices to better reflect your actual preferences
  • Add safety nets below your mock allotment to ensure you get something in Round 1

What to Look for in Mock Allotment Results

Scenario 1: Not Allotted

Action: Add many more choices. Look at the closing ranks for 2024–2025 in institutes slightly below your rank, and add those as backups. Add GFTIs and NE NITs as absolute safety nets.

Scenario 2: Allotted something reasonable

Action: Ensure all choices ABOVE your mock allotment are correctly ordered from most to least preferred. Add any dream choices you may have missed. The allotted option becomes your Floor — Float will try to upgrade above it.

Scenario 3: Allotted something you strongly dislike

Action: This is a sign your choice list lacks good options in your rank range. Add more realistic options — not just dream choices. Also add more safety nets so you get a choice you can tolerate even if upgrades fail.

1
How many mock allotments are there in JoSAA 2026?
JoSAA typically releases 2 mock allotments before Round 1 choice locking. Mock 1 is released early in the choice filling window, Mock 2 is released a day or two before the final lock deadline. Both are simulations — you can edit choices after each mock result before the final lock deadline.
2
Does my mock allotment guarantee the same allotment in Round 1?
No — mock allotments are simulations based on choices submitted by candidates up to that point in time. Final Round 1 allotment uses the full set of locked choices from all registered candidates, which changes significantly as more students register and lock choices. Treat mock results as directional guidance, not a guarantee.
3
What should I change after seeing a poor mock allotment result?
If your mock result shows 'Not Allotted': add more choices in the rank range close to and slightly above your expected allotment, plus add safety net choices well below. If allotted something you do not want: reorder your choice list so preferences are correctly ranked. If happy with mock result: ensure you have added enough choices above it for upgrade attempts via Float.
4
Can I add completely new choices that I had not added before the mock allotment?
Yes — during the choice editing window (after mock allotment and before final lock), you can add new college-branch combinations, remove existing ones, and completely reorder your list. The mock allotment was just a snapshot; the final lock is what counts.
5
What happens if I forget to re-lock my choices after editing post-mock allotment?
If you make edits but do not re-lock before the lock deadline, different portals handle this differently — some may auto-submit your last saved choices, others may use your pre-edit version. Do NOT rely on auto-save. Always explicitly lock/submit your final choice list before the deadline. Treat the lock action as mandatory.
