Your home state for NIT quota purposes is where you passed Class 12 — not where you were born or where your family lives.
How the Home State Quota Works
JoSAA itself has no home state quota. The home state (HS) quota is a feature of individual NITs, which reserve 50% of their seats for students from the state in which the NIT is located. These seats appear as separate pools in JoSAA's choice-filling interface.
When you are filling choices in JoSAA for NIT seats, you will see two types of entries for the same college and branch: "Home State" and "Other State" (or HS/OS). If NIT Trichy – CSE has 60 seats total, roughly 30 seats are reserved for Tamil Nadu home state students and 30 are open for all-India (OS) students.
The HS quota seats have a lower closing rank than OS seats for most popular NITs — meaning you need a higher rank to get in as an OS candidate than as an HS candidate. For NIT Trichy CSE (Open category), the HS closing rank is typically much lower than the OS closing rank, making it significantly easier to get in as a Tamil Nadu student.

Strategy: How Relocated Students Should Fill Choices
- Identify your home state first — check your Class 12 board/school's state. This is your HS eligibility for NIT quota purposes.
- Add both HS and OS entries for NITs in your state — the HS closing rank is usually more favourable, giving you a better chance of getting in.
- Do not add HS seats for wrong states — if you claim HS quota for a state you are not eligible for, your seat can be cancelled upon document verification at the institute.
- Carry Class 12 documents clearly showing the school's state for physical reporting — the institute will verify your HS claim against these documents.
