Can I Get NIT with 90 Percentile in JEE Main 2026?

90 percentile ≈ rank ~1,20,000 (General CRL) — some NITs are possible, many IIITs and GFTIs are within reach

What Does 90 Percentile Mean in JEE Main 2026?

A JEE Main score at 90 percentile means you scored better than 90% of all candidates who appeared. With approximately 12–13 lakh candidates appearing, this translates to a Common Rank List (CRL) rank of roughly 1,20,000–1,30,000 for the General (unreserved) category.

This rank puts you in the top 10% of all JEE Main aspirants — a respectable achievement. However, the competition for popular NIT seats is intense. The top 10 NITs for CSE under OS quota typically have closing ranks in the 1,000–10,000 range, making them out of reach at this rank.

The good news: India's NIT system includes 31 NITs spread across the country, and many have closing ranks well above 1,00,000. Additionally, IIITs and GFTIs offer excellent options at this rank range. Also explore CSAB after JoSAA for additional chances.

Strategy for 90 Percentile Candidates

1. Maximize home state advantage

If your home state NIT is in a less competitive state (NE India, UT), your home state quota dramatically improves your chances. Always fill HS seats as top priorities in choice filling.

2. Don't ignore IIITs

Many IIITs (PPP model) have excellent placement records comparable to mid-tier NITs. IIIT Dharwad, Vadodara, Una, Kottayam, and others are genuinely reachable at rank ~1,20,000.

3. Explore GFTIs extensively

GFTIs are often overlooked but offer government-backed education with closing ranks spanning a wide range. IIEST Shibpur, NIFFT Ranchi, and others deserve a place in your choice list.

4. Apply to CSAB after JoSAA

CSAB runs special rounds on JoSAA's leftover NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats. Candidates who don't get a seat in JoSAA should register for CSAB immediately — it often has seats available at this rank.

5. State counselling runs in parallel

Don't put all eggs in JoSAA. KCET, WBJEE, MHT-CET, TNEA, and other state counselling processes run simultaneously and may offer excellent government college options in your state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about getting NIT with 90 percentile in JEE Main 2026

1
Can I get an NIT with 90 percentile (General category)?
With 90 percentile (~rank 1,20,000 for General CRL), you are unlikely to get top-10 NITs in any popular branch under Other State (OS) quota. However, lower-tier NITs in North-East states (Sikkim, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh) and some UT-based NITs have closing ranks well above 1,00,000 for OS quota, so a seat there is possible. Home state candidates in less-competitive states have even better chances.
2
Can I get NIT with 90 percentile under home state quota?
It depends heavily on your home state. If your home state NIT is in a less competitive state (e.g., NIT Meghalaya, NIT Sikkim, NIT Nagaland, NIT Manipur, NIT Mizoram), 90 percentile / rank ~1,20,000 is sufficient. If your home state NIT is NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, or NIT Surathkal, 90 percentile is not enough even for HS quota CSE. For non-CSE branches at mid-tier NITs in HS quota, you may qualify.
3
Can I get IIIT with 90 percentile in JEE Main?
Yes — many IIITs (especially PPP-model IIITs) have closing ranks in the 15,000–50,000 range for popular branches. However, several newer IIITs have closing ranks beyond 80,000–1,50,000. With 90 percentile (~rank 1,20,000), you can target IIITs like IIIT Dharwad, IIIT Vadodara, IIIT Kottayam, IIIT Una, IIIT Lucknow (non-CSE branches), etc. Use the College Predictor for personalized results.
4
Can I get GFTI with 90 percentile?
Yes. GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) have closing ranks ranging widely from 20,000 to 3,00,000+. With rank ~1,20,000, you have very good options among GFTIs across India in multiple branches including CSE. Examples include IIEST Shibpur, NIFFT Ranchi, NIT Puducherry, and various other GFTIs.
5
What colleges can I get with 90 percentile in JEE Main 2026?
At 90 percentile (~rank 1,20,000 General CRL): You can get lower-tier NITs (NE states, UTs), most IIITs (non-top branches), and many GFTIs. You should also explore state counselling (KCET, WBJEE, MHT-CET, etc.) which may offer better options. Top NITs for CSE/ECE under OS quota require rank below 10,000–20,000 — significantly better than 1,20,000.
