JoSAA 2026 DASA/NRI Quota Seats – Eligibility, Fees & Process

DASA seats at NITs and IIITs for NRI/foreign students via SAT score. Supernumerary seats above regular JEE Main intake.

DASA Scheme for NIT/IIIT Admission — Overview

The DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) scheme provides a pathway for NRI, OCI, PIO, and foreign national students to gain admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs without appearing for JEE Main. Admission is based on SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) scores. DASA seats are supernumerary — additional seats on top of the regular JEE Main-based intake, so they don't affect regular Indian students' admission chances.

DASA 2026 is administered by NIT Warangal as the coordinating institute. Applications are submitted on the official DASA portal (dasanit.org). Eligible candidates include Indian nationals abroad, NRI/OCI/PIO holders, and foreign nationals who have completed or are completing equivalent of Class 12 with PCM.

NRI Students with JEE Main Score — Use JoSAA, Not DASA

An important clarification: NRI students who appeared for JEE Main from India should use the regular JoSAA counselling route — not DASA. JoSAA treats NRI students the same as Indian resident students for the purpose of JEE Main-based admissions. You get the same rank list and same access to NIT/IIIT seats.

DASA is specifically for students who could NOT appear for JEE Main because they were studying/residing abroad. If you have a JEE Main rank, JoSAA is your route and gives better options than DASA at competitive programs. Use DASA only if you are unable to qualify or appear for JEE Main from India.

JoSAA 2026 DASA NRI Seats – FAQs

Common questions about DASA/NRI quota seats in JoSAA 2026

1
What is DASA scheme for NIT admission?
DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is a scheme under which NRI/foreign students can get direct admission to NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions without JEE Main. Eligibility: Students who have passed Class 12 or equivalent from a foreign country with PCM subjects. Admission is based on SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) scores. DASA seats are supernumerary (additional) seats at NITs — they don't reduce seats for JEE Main students.
2
Who is eligible for DASA/NRI quota in JoSAA 2026?
DASA 2026 eligibility: (1) Indian nationals studying abroad or NRI/OCI/PIO card holders. (2) Foreign nationals. (3) Must have passed Class 12 equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. (4) Must have a valid SAT Subject Test score (typically Math Level 2 and Physics or Chemistry required). (5) Minimum SAT score thresholds apply (check official DASA brochure). Note: DASA runs through the DASA portal (not JoSAA directly) for NITs. Contact NIT helpdesks for institute-specific NRI quota.
3
What are the fees for DASA/NRI quota at NITs?
DASA/NRI quota fees are significantly higher than regular JEE Main admission fees. For NITs, DASA students typically pay approximately USD 4,000–6,000 per year (approximately ₹3.3–5 lakh per year at current rates). IITs may have different NRI fee structures. The exact fee varies by NIT and program — check the official DASA website (dasanit.org) and individual NIT websites for 2026 fee structures. Scholarship opportunities for DASA students are limited.
4
How many DASA seats are available at NITs in 2026?
DASA seats are supernumerary (additional) at each NIT — typically 5–10% of the approved sanctioned intake per program. For example, NIT Trichy CSE with 60 regular seats might have 3–6 DASA seats. Total DASA seats across all NITs are approximately 1,000–2,000 seats in various programs. Competition for DASA seats at top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal) is high. DASA seats at lower-tier NITs are more easily accessible.
5
Can NRI students use JEE Main rank for NIT admission?
Yes. NRI students who appeared for JEE Main from India are eligible for regular JoSAA counselling using their JEE Main rank, just like Indian resident students. NRI status alone does not restrict you from the regular JoSAA process. DASA is for students who could NOT appear for JEE Main due to residing abroad. If you have a JEE Main rank, use the regular JoSAA route — cutoffs are the same as for Indian residents under the appropriate category.
