Optimal Order to Fill Choices in JoSAA 2026

Always put BEST choice first. JoSAA gives you the best available option from your list. Fill 80–100+ choices. Never put safe choices above aspirational ones.

The Golden Rule of JoSAA Choice Filling

The most important rule in JoSAA 2026 choice filling: always arrange choices in strict order of your preference, from most desired to least desired. JoSAA's algorithm scans your list from top to bottom and allots you the BEST choice your rank qualifies for. There is no strategic benefit to putting a "safe" choice above an aspirational one — you can never lose a better opportunity by listing it first.

Example: If NIT Trichy CSE is your dream but NIT Warangal CSE is also acceptable, and NIT Surathkal CSE is your safe bet — put them in exactly that order. JoSAA checks NIT Trichy CSE first. If your rank qualifies, you get it. If not, it checks NIT Warangal CSE. If that doesn't work, NIT Surathkal CSE. You never "waste" a high-preference choice by listing it first.

Recommended Choice Order Framework

#1–5Stretch IIT choices (slightly above rank)
#6–20Realistic IIT choices within your rank range
#21–40Top NIT CSE/ECE (home state quota first, then OS)
#41–60Top NIT non-CS branches, IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Hyderabad
#61–80Mid-tier NIT CSE (Rourkela, Calicut, MNIT)
#81–100Mid-tier NIT ECE, IIIT CSE
#100+Safe NIT branches, GFTIs, lower-tier NITs

Home State vs Other State Ordering

Home state (HS) quota choices should be listed ABOVE corresponding other state (OS) choices for the same college/branch, since HS cutoffs are lower (better access at same rank). Example: NIT Trichy CSE HS (if you are from Tamil Nadu) should be listed above NIT Trichy CSE OS in your preference list. The HS version has lower closing rank, so you're more likely to get it — but since it's also your preferred version, it goes first.

Use our college predictor to identify which NIT + branch combinations are accessible in HS quota at your rank versus OS quota. Then structure your choices accordingly.

JoSAA Choice Filling Order – FAQs

Common questions about optimal choice filling order in JoSAA 2026

1
What is the correct order to fill choices in JoSAA 2026?
The correct order in JoSAA 2026 is ALWAYS from best to worst preference — put your most desired college and branch first, your second choice second, and so on. JoSAA's algorithm allots you the BEST possible choice from your list that your rank qualifies for. This means: if you put NIT Trichy CSE at #1, NIT Warangal CSE at #2, and NIT Surathkal CSE at #3, JoSAA gives you the best one your rank can achieve. Never put a 'safe' choice above an aspirational one.
2
Should I put IITs before NITs in JoSAA 2026 choice list?
If you are JEE Advanced qualified and have realistic IIT options: yes, always put IIT choices above NIT choices for the same level of desirability. JoSAA handles both IIT and NIT/IIIT/GFTI choices in one list. If IIT Hyderabad ECE is more desirable to you than NIT Trichy ECE, put IIT Hyderabad ECE first. Never mix up the order — the JoSAA algorithm works top-to-bottom through your preference list.
3
How many choices should I fill in JoSAA 2026?
Fill as many choices as possible — target 80–100+ choices. JoSAA allows you to fill up to approximately 25,000 choices. More choices means more chances of getting a seat if your top preferences don't materialise. Strategies: (1) Fill all realistic choices first (IIT > NIT > IIIT > GFTI). (2) Then fill stretch choices (slightly above your rank). (3) Then fill safe choices (well within your rank). You cannot lose anything by filling more choices — JoSAA always gives your BEST available option.
4
Can a lower-ranked choice ever hurt me in JoSAA?
No. In JoSAA, having more choices NEVER hurts you. The algorithm works top-to-bottom through your list and allots the BEST choice your rank qualifies for — it never allots a worse choice when a better one is available. You cannot 'fall down' to a lower choice if a better choice is available. This is why you should always fill 80–100+ choices — the more choices you have, the better your chances of getting a good allotment even if your top choices are missed.
5
What is the typical mistake in JoSAA choice filling order?
Common mistakes in JoSAA choice filling order: (1) Putting 'safe' choices at the top instead of aspirational ones — this loses you better options. (2) Not filling enough choices (less than 30) — you may get no allotment in early rounds. (3) Inconsistent ordering — mixing up IIT and NIT choices randomly. (4) Forgetting to include home state NIT choices at the right position. (5) Not using our college predictor to identify the closing ranks for each choice and order them correctly. Use the predictor to set realistic expectations for each choice.
