Choice Filling

JoSAA 2026 – Can You Add More Choices After Locking?

No — once locked, your choice list is final for all 5 rounds. Here is what you can do and how to avoid this situation.

The Definitive Answer: NO Changes After Locking

Once you lock your choice list in JoSAA, that list is absolutely final for all 5 rounds of allotment. You cannot:

✗

Add new choices

✗

Remove existing choices

✗

Reorder your priority list

What you CAN do each round, after an allotment is made:

✓

Choose Freeze / Float / Slide

✓

Pay seat acceptance fee

✓

Withdraw from JoSAA

Why This Rule Exists

JoSAA uses a Deferred Acceptance algorithm. For the algorithm to be fair across all 5 rounds and for all candidates simultaneously, each candidate must have a single fixed preference order throughout the process. Allowing mid-process changes would make the algorithm unstable and unfair to candidates who did not change their lists. It is a deliberate design choice, not a technical limitation.

Damage Control: If You Missed Adding Important Choices

If you have already locked your list and realized you missed important choices, here are the damage control options in order of effectiveness:

  1. 1

Check If You Already Have the Missed Choice

    Do This First

This sounds obvious but many candidates discover the choice they thought they missed is actually already in their locked list — perhaps added earlier and forgotten. Scroll through your full choice list carefully before panicking.

  2. 2

    Use Float Aggressively

    Critical Strategy

If you receive any allotment, select Float (not Freeze) in every round until you reach your best outcome. Float allows the algorithm to check higher-priority choices in your locked list in subsequent rounds as seats get vacated. Never choose Freeze until you are genuinely satisfied with your current allotment.

  3. 3

Accept the Best JoSAA Allotment and Plan CSAB

    Post-JoSAA Option

After JoSAA Round 5, register for CSAB (csab.nic.in). CSAB allows fresh choice filling for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs. Add all the choices you missed in JoSAA, including the missed one. CSAB only works for NIT/IIIT/GFTI — you cannot access IIT seats via CSAB.

  4. 4

Explore State Counselling as Parallel Option

    Parallel Track

If the missed choice was in a specific state or if state counselling is more relevant to your backup plans, register there while JoSAA rounds continue. State counselling registration is usually free or low-cost, so there is no downside to registering early.

The Lesson: Add 80–100+ Choices Before Locking

The single biggest mistake in JoSAA choice filling is locking too few choices. The JoSAA portal allows you to add hundreds of choices — take full advantage of this. Here is why more choices are always better:

Adding more choices costs zero extra effort

The algorithm ignores choices that are out of your rank range. An extra 50 choices at the bottom of your list do not affect your chance of getting a top choice — they only improve your floor.

Your 80th choice could be your actual admission

Closing ranks shift year to year. A college that seemed out of reach may close higher in 2026 than 2025. A choice you added 'just in case' at position 85 might turn out to be the seat you actually get.

Multiple categories expand options significantly

Add the same college-branch combination for different categories (if eligible): Open, OBC-NCL, Home State, All India. Each is a separate choice and each improves your chance of an allotment.

Start with aspirational choices, end with safety choices

Put your true dream choice at #1 regardless of reachability. The algorithm processes in order — it will skip unreachable choices and find your first feasible option. Having IIT Bombay CSE at #1 costs nothing.

The Golden Rule of JoSAA Choice Filling

Add every institute and branch combination you would genuinely attend if allotted. Sort them strictly by preference. Lock only when you are completely satisfied with your list. There is no second chance after locking.

1
What happens if I locked choices with only 10–15 options?
If you locked only 10–15 choices, you significantly limit your chances in subsequent rounds. The algorithm can only upgrade you to choices already in your locked list. If none of those 10–15 choices are achievable at your rank, you will not receive any allotment at all. Damage control: in early rounds (1–3), you can still contact JoSAA helpdesk, though officially no changes are permitted. Your best remaining option is to use Float aggressively and hope that one of your locked choices becomes achievable in later rounds. If JoSAA does not yield any result, register for CSAB (csab.nic.in) with a full choice list.
2
Can I change my choices between JoSAA rounds?
No. Unlike some other counselling processes, JoSAA does NOT allow you to add or change choices between rounds. The only decisions you make after each round are: pay the seat acceptance fee (if allotted), choose Freeze/Float/Slide, or withdraw. The choice list itself is fixed after locking. This is a fundamental design choice of the JoSAA algorithm — it ensures fairness across all 5 rounds by using a single stable preference order for each candidate.
3
What is the Freeze/Float/Slide mechanism and how does it relate to choices?
Freeze, Float, and Slide are responses after each allotment — they control whether the algorithm tries to improve your seat in the next round. Freeze: accept current seat, exit further rounds. Float: hold current seat but ask algorithm to check if any higher-priority choice (from your locked list) has a vacancy in the next round. Slide: try for a better branch in the same institute only. Critically, Float can only move you to choices ABOVE your current allotment in your locked list — it cannot access choices below your current allotment or choices you did not lock.
4
What should I do if I realize I missed adding an important choice after locking?
Officially, nothing can be done — the choice list is final. But practically: 1) Check if the missed choice is already somewhere in your locked list below your current allotment (you may have added it already). 2) If you have a current allotment, choose Float to maximize chance of upgrading to higher choices. 3) Accept whatever your best JoSAA allotment is. 4) After JoSAA ends, register for CSAB and add the missed choice there if it is a NIT/IIIT/GFTI. 5) Consider whether the missed choice had a realistic closing rank at your rank — in many cases, the 'missed choice' would not have been allotted anyway.
5
How many choices should I ideally add before locking in JoSAA 2026?
The widely recommended range is 80–120 choices, though you can add hundreds. The JoSAA portal allows unlimited choices. The logic: more choices = more chances for at least one allotment. The algorithm processes your list from top to bottom and gives you your highest feasible choice. Even if your 85th choice is a North-East NIT branch, having it there costs you nothing — but it guarantees you have a seat rather than getting zero allotment. Always add every institute that you would genuinely attend if allotted, no matter how unlikely it seems.
