Multiple Counselling

Can I Do JoSAA and State Counselling at the Same Time?

Yes — but managing parallel counsellings requires strategy. Here is how to avoid losing fees and missing deadlines.

Is It Legal to Participate in Both?

Yes — there is no rule preventing you from registering in both JoSAA and one or more state counsellings simultaneously. JoSAA does not communicate in real-time with state counselling portals. You can register, fill choices, and even receive allotments in both processes at the same time.

The catch is purely financial and logistical. If you accept a seat in both JoSAA and a state counselling by paying acceptance fees in both, you will eventually have to choose one — and the fee paid to the one you do not join is typically non-refundable.

The Golden Rule

Register in state counsellings early (free or low-cost). Delay paying any acceptance fee until you have clarity on your JoSAA outcome (by Round 4 or 5).

Recommended Strategy: JoSAA Primary, State as Backup

Here is the step-by-step approach most counsellors recommend for managing parallel admissions in 2026:

  1. Step 1 (Early June)

Register on josaa.nic.in. Simultaneously register on all relevant state counselling portals. Registrations are usually free or cost ₹500–1,000.

  2. Step 2 (June–Mid July)

Fill choices on JoSAA. Also fill preferences on state counselling portals. Do NOT pay any seat acceptance fee yet on state portals.

  3. Step 3 (JoSAA Round 3–4 Results)

Evaluate your JoSAA allotment seriously. If you have a NIT/IIIT/GFTI you are happy with, consider paying JoSAA acceptance fee and dropping state counselling. If not, continue monitoring both.

  4. Step 4 (JoSAA Round 5–6)

If JoSAA is not yielding a desirable result, pay state counselling seat confirmation fee for your best state allotment before the deadline. This secures your backup.

  5. Step 5 (After JoSAA Round 5)

Make your final call. Join whichever college you prefer — JoSAA allotment, state college, or CSAB. Be clear on refund policies before paying both.

Refund Policies at a Glance

Before paying any fee, understand what is refundable and what is not:

JoSAA Seat Acceptance Fee

₹35,000 (General/OBC) or ₹15,000 (SC/ST/PwD). Lost if you do not join the allotted institute.

Non-refundable

JoSAA Registration Fee

₹500–800 typically. Administrative fee, not recoverable.

Non-refundable

State Counselling Registration

₹500–2,000 depending on state. Lost regardless of outcome.

State Seat Acceptance Fee

Some states (MHT-CET, AP) have partial refund policies. Check each state's brochure.

Partially refundable
1
Will I lose my JoSAA seat if I register in state counselling?
No. Simply registering in a state counselling does not affect your JoSAA participation in any way. The issue arises only if you pay seat confirmation fees in both processes. If you are allotted a seat in both and pay the acceptance fee in both, you will lose whichever fee you do not act upon. Always read the refund policy of the state counselling before paying any acceptance fees.
2
Can I attend multiple state counsellings at the same time as JoSAA?
Yes, legally you can register in multiple state counsellings while also participating in JoSAA. There is no central system linking these processes. However, managing multiple registrations, document uploads, fee payments, and deadlines simultaneously is logistically demanding. Focus on JoSAA as your primary process and limit state counsellings to 1–2 that are most relevant to your rank and preferences.
3
What is the best strategy if I have a JEE Main rank of 30,000–80,000?
At rank 30,000–80,000, JoSAA can give you mid-tier or lower NITs/IIITs. Strategy: 1) Participate in JoSAA and fill as many choices as possible, 2) Simultaneously register in your home state counselling (e.g., MHT-CET for Maharashtra, TNEA for Tamil Nadu) which may offer better value, 3) Don't pay state counselling seat acceptance fee until you see your JoSAA Round 3–4 outcome, 4) If JoSAA gives you something acceptable by Round 4, drop state counselling. If not, commit to state counselling.
4
Do states accept JEE Main scores directly or do I need a separate exam?
It varies by state. Maharashtra (MHT-CET), Andhra Pradesh (AP EAMCET), and Telangana (TS EAMCET) require their own separate exams. Karnataka (KCET) also has its own exam. However, many states like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and others accept JEE Main scores directly for admissions to state government engineering colleges. Some states also have a JEE Main quota — seats reserved for students who appeared in JEE Main but wish to study in state colleges.
5
If I join a state college after accepting a JoSAA seat, will I get a JoSAA fee refund?
No. The JoSAA seat acceptance fee (₹35,000 for General, ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD) is non-refundable once paid, even if you decide to join a state college instead. This is a sunk cost you must factor into your planning. If you are seriously considering a state option over JoSAA, do not pay the JoSAA seat acceptance fee. You can withdraw from JoSAA before paying the fee without any penalty.
