JoSAA

Can I Change My Allotted Institute After JoSAA Allotment?

The direct answer is no — but Float gives you a legitimate upgrade path. Here is exactly how it works

The Short Answer

You CANNOT directly swap your allotted institute for a different one mid-round.

JoSAA does not have a "transfer" option. Once a round is completed and you have accepted a seat, you cannot request a change to a different institute outside the allotment algorithm. However, there are three legitimate paths to potentially get a different institute:

Your 3 Options

Option 1: Use Float (Recommended)

Choose Float after accepting your current seat. In the next round, the algorithm tries to upgrade you to a higher-preference choice — which can be a completely different institute. Your current seat is never at risk. Float is the safest and best way to chase a better institute.

Key requirement: The target institute must be listed ABOVE your current allotment in your choice list.

Option 2: Withdraw and Try CSAB

You can withdraw from JoSAA entirely and register for CSAB 2026 to try for a different NIT/IIIT/GFTI. This is risky — you lose your current allotment permanently and CSAB only has vacant seats (typically less-popular choices). Only do this if you are certain your current allotment is unacceptable.

Warning: Withdrawal is irreversible. You cannot re-enter JoSAA.

Option 3: Accept Current Seat, Apply Elsewhere Too

Accept your JoSAA seat (keep it secured), then simultaneously apply to private college admissions (BITSAT, VITEEE, Manipal, etc.) or other state counselling. If you get a better private college and prefer it, you can decline the JoSAA seat later and report to the private institution instead.

How Float Upgrades Work — Real Example

Suppose in Round 3 you are allotted NIT Warangal – Mechanical Engineering (choice #8 in your list). Your choice list above it includes NIT Warangal CSE (choice #4) and IIT Roorkee EE (choice #2).

  • If you choose Float, Round 4 algorithm tries to seat you at choice #2 first (IIT Roorkee EE), then #4 (NIT Warangal CSE), before falling back to your current seat.
  • If IIT Roorkee EE has a vacancy (from someone who upgraded to IIT Delhi), you get upgraded there automatically.
  • If neither #2 nor #4 is available, you keep NIT Warangal Mechanical — no loss.

This is why filling your choice list carefully — with all preferred choices ABOVE your expected allotment — is crucial before locking.

1
If I choose Float, will I definitely get a better institute?
Not necessarily. Float attempts an upgrade only if a seat becomes available in a higher-preference choice from your list (due to other candidates withdrawing or upgrading). If all your higher-preference choices remain full, you keep your current seat. Your current allotment is NEVER taken away when you choose Float — it only gets better or stays the same.
2
What is the difference between Float and Slide for changing institute?
Float can upgrade you to ANY higher-preference choice in your list — including a completely different institute. Slide can only upgrade you to a better branch/programme within the SAME institute you are currently allotted to. To change institute, you need Float, not Slide.
3
Can I withdraw from JoSAA and apply again in the same year?
Once you formally withdraw from JoSAA, you cannot re-enter the same JoSAA cycle. Your seat is cancelled and released to other candidates. You can apply to CSAB 2026 after withdrawal for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats, but you cannot return to JoSAA. Think very carefully before withdrawing.
4
What happens to my seat acceptance fee if I withdraw?
If you withdraw, the seat acceptance fee (Rs.45,000 or Rs.20,000) is partially refunded after deducting a processing fee as per JoSAA's stated refund policy. The exact amount is specified in the JoSAA 2026 Information Brochure. If you do not accept the seat at all (do not pay the fee), no deduction applies.
5
I got NIT Surathkal CSE in Round 1. My dream is IIT Madras. Should I choose Float?
Yes — if IIT Madras is in your choice list above NIT Surathkal CSE, choosing Float keeps your NIT Surathkal CSE seat while the algorithm tries to upgrade you to IIT Madras in subsequent rounds. There is no downside. Only switch to Freeze once you are satisfied with your current allotment.
