Slide vs Float

JoSAA 2026 Slide vs Float – What Is the Difference?

Float = any better option anywhere. Slide = better branch at same college only. Both protect your current seat — no downside risk

Core Difference at a Glance

F

Float

Attempts upgrade to ANY higher-preference choice in your list — can be a completely different institute, different city, different branch.

Use when:

You want the best possible outcome from your entire choice list, including different colleges.

S

Slide

Attempts upgrade to a better branch/programme within the SAME institute ONLY. Will never change your allotted college — only the branch.

Use when:

Happy with current college, want only a better branch at the same place.

Both Float AND Slide share one critical guarantee:

Your current allotted seat is NEVER taken away. If the upgrade attempt fails (no better seat available), you keep exactly what you have now.

Decision Guide: Which Option Should You Choose?

Choose Float when:

  • Your choice list has better colleges (not just branches) above your current allotment
  • You want maximum upgrade potential — including institute changes
  • You are not fully committed to your current college
  • Default recommendation in most cases — Float has no downside

Choose Slide when:

  • You are happy with your current college and ONLY want a branch upgrade there
  • You have better branches at the same institute listed above your current allotment
  • You do NOT want to be moved to a different institute even if a better one is available
  • Example: NIT Trichy Mechanical → want NIT Trichy CSE, but NOT NIT Warangal CSE

Choose Freeze when:

  • You are completely satisfied with your current allotment (institute AND branch)
  • No upgrade attempts needed — exit the process and confirm your seat

Visual Example: Float vs Slide in Action

Your current allotment (Round 3): NIT Surathkal – Mechanical Engineering (choice #12)

Higher-preference choices above #12 in your list:

  • #3 — IIT Hyderabad – EE
  • #6 — NIT Surathkal – ECE (SAME institute, better branch)
  • #9 — NIT Trichy – Mechanical (DIFFERENT institute)

If you choose Float:

Algorithm tries #3, #6, #9 in order. First available = your upgrade. Could be IIT Hyderabad, NIT Surathkal ECE, OR NIT Trichy Mechanical. Best option wins.

If you choose Slide:

Algorithm ONLY tries #6 (NIT Surathkal ECE — same institute). #3 and #9 are ignored because they are different institutes. If #6 is unavailable, you keep Mechanical.

1
Does Float ever take away my current seat?
Never. Float is designed with a built-in safety net. If no higher-preference choice is available at your rank in the next round, you automatically keep your current allotment. The word 'float' means you are floating upward toward better options — you cannot float downward or lose what you have.
2
When should I choose Slide over Float?
Choose Slide when you are happy with your current institute and want to pursue a better branch at the same college (e.g., you have NIT Warangal Mechanical but want NIT Warangal ECE). Slide is more focused than Float — it does not change your institute. If there is no higher-preference branch at your current institute in your choice list, Slide has no effect.
3
Can I change from Slide to Float before the deadline?
Yes — you can change your response (Freeze/Float/Slide) any number of times before the response window deadline for that round. The final response at the deadline is what counts. If you chose Slide but later decide Float is better, change it before the deadline.
4
What if I chose Float but all my higher-preference choices are in a different city?
That is exactly what Float is for. Float can move you to any higher-preference choice — different city, different state, different institute. If you have NIT Calicut ECE (current) and IIT Hyderabad EE (higher preference), Float will try to upgrade you to IIT Hyderabad EE if a seat becomes available at your rank.
5
In Round 5 (final round), does Float/Slide still work?
Yes — Float and Slide are active in all 5 rounds. In Round 5, if you choose Float and a higher-preference seat becomes available (due to other candidates' final decisions), you can still be upgraded. After Round 5 allotment is published, you must Freeze or accept the final allotment and report to the institute.
