JoSAA Eligibility

Can a Dropper Participate in JoSAA 2026?

Yes — droppers can fully participate. Attempt limits, IIT age restrictions, and why being a dropper has zero impact on JoSAA counselling

Short Answer: YES

Droppers (repeaters) can participate in JoSAA 2026 without any disadvantage, as long as their JEE Main or JEE Advanced 2026 rank is valid.

JoSAA is a rank-based allocation system. The algorithm does not know or care whether you passed Class 12 in 2024, 2025, or are attempting JEE in your third year. Your rank in the current year's JEE (Main or Advanced) is the only input that matters for seat allocation.

There is no separate application form for droppers, no additional declaration needed in JoSAA, and no different treatment during physical reporting. Droppers and fresh-batch candidates follow the exact same JoSAA process.

Attempt Limits — What Every Dropper Should Know

JEE Main Attempt Limits

  • Maximum 3 consecutive years
  • Up to 2 sessions per year (Jan + April)
  • Total: up to 6 attempts
  • No age limit for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission

JEE Advanced Attempt Limits

  • Maximum 2 attempts total
  • Must be in consecutive years
  • Age limit: born after Oct 1, 2001 (Gen)
  • SC/ST/PwD: born after Oct 1, 1996

Eligibility Scenarios for Droppers

Eligible

Class 12 passed in 2024, first JEE attempt in 2026

Valid for JEE Main (2 of 6 attempts used). Valid for JEE Advanced if qualified (2nd attempt if appeared in 2025, or 1st attempt if not). IIT age check: Gen born after Oct 1, 2001 — check your DOB.

Eligible

Class 12 passed in 2025, appearing in JEE 2026

Standard 1-year drop. Fully eligible for JEE Main and JEE Advanced 2026. No issues with any institute.

Check Carefully

Class 12 passed in 2023, attempting JEE Main 2026

2026 would be the 4th year — beyond the 3 consecutive years limit for JEE Main. Likely NOT eligible for JEE Main 2026 unless NTA policy changes. Verify with official JEE Main 2026 notification.

1
Is there any mark or label on my JoSAA application that shows I am a dropper?
No — there is no 'dropper' label in JoSAA or at the institutes. Your admission is determined entirely by your JEE rank and choice list. Whether you passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025, it makes no difference to JoSAA's algorithm or to the institute during admission.
2
How many times can I attempt JEE Main?
JEE Main allows 3 consecutive years of attempts, with 2 attempts per year (January and April sessions). This means a student who passes Class 12 in 2025 can attempt JEE Main in 2025 (twice), 2026 (twice), and 2027 (twice) — a maximum of 6 attempts total over 3 years.
3
How many times can I attempt JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced can be attempted a maximum of 2 times in consecutive years. If you passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025, you can appear in JEE Advanced 2026 as long as this falls within your 2-attempt window and you meet the JEE Main qualification criteria.
4
Is there an age limit for IIT admissions through JoSAA?
Yes — IITs have an age limit. Candidates must be born on or after October 1, 2001 (for JEE Advanced 2026) for General/OBC/EWS category. SC/ST/PwD candidates get a 5-year relaxation — born on or after October 1, 1996. NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs do NOT have an age limit restriction.
5
Does dropping a year hurt my chances in JoSAA in any way?
No — JoSAA is purely merit-based. Your rank determines everything. Dropping a year does not affect your rank computation, allotment process, or treatment during physical reporting at the institute. Many toppers and highly-ranked candidates are droppers. The algorithm has no mechanism to differentiate.
