JoSAA 2026 Allotment Letter – Download & Contents
Your allotment letter is mandatory for physical reporting. Here is everything you need to know.
Why the Allotment Letter Matters
The JoSAA provisional allotment letter is one of the most important documents in your entire counselling journey. It is generated automatically on josaa.nic.in after each round's seat allotment result is published, and it serves as your official proof of allotment when you report to the allotted institute — either online for document verification in earlier rounds, or physically at the campus after the final round. Without this letter, most institutes will not process your admission, regardless of how clearly your name appears on the JoSAA results page, because the letter contains the specific, timestamped record the institute's admission office uses to verify your seat.
Each round of JoSAA produces its own version of the letter, since your allotted institute, branch, or seat category can change between rounds if you choose to float or slide rather than freeze your seat. It is good practice to download and save the letter after every round you are allotted a seat in, not just the final one, so you have a complete record of your allotment history in case any discrepancy needs to be resolved later. Typically, JoSAA runs several allotment rounds, and the letter from your final confirmed round — the one you freeze or the one active when the process concludes — is the version you will need for physical reporting.

Provisional vs Final: What Happens After You Download
It's worth repeating that every letter you download during JoSAA rounds is explicitly marked "provisional," and this distinction matters practically, not just legally. Your seat is only provisionally yours until the allotted institute completes its own document verification process — checking your Class 10 and 12 certificates, category certificate (if applicable), JEE scorecard, and identity proof against what you submitted during JoSAA registration. Only after this institute-level verification, along with payment of the requisite fees, does the institute typically issue its own formal admission or enrollment confirmation, which is the document that finally closes out your admission process.
Because of this two-step structure, always keep your original documents ready alongside your downloaded allotment letter well before your reporting date. Any mismatch between your JoSAA-registered details and your original certificates — even something as small as a spelling variation in your name — can delay verification, so it is worth reviewing your allotment letter carefully as soon as you download it and flagging any discrepancy to JoSAA support immediately rather than waiting until you reach the reporting centre.
Important Notes
- •This is a PROVISIONAL allotment — final admission is confirmed only after document verification at the institute.
- •Print at least 5 copies. Most institutes keep 2–3 copies during reporting.
- •Save the PDF to Google Drive or email — the portal may close after counselling ends.
Common Issues While Downloading and How to Handle Them
During peak counselling periods, especially right after a round's results are announced, the JoSAA portal can experience heavy traffic, occasionally causing slow page loads or timeout errors when attempting to download the letter. If this happens, try again after a short interval, avoid refreshing repeatedly (which can add further load), and consider accessing the portal during off-peak hours such as early morning if the issue persists into the next day. Using a stable internet connection and an updated browser also reduces the chance of a corrupted or incomplete PDF download.
If your allotment letter shows incorrect personal details, an incorrect category, or an unexpected branch that does not match what you saw on the results page, do not assume it is a display glitch — raise the discrepancy through JoSAA's official grievance or helpdesk channel as soon as possible, since these issues typically need to be resolved before you report to the institute rather than after. Screenshots of both the results page and the downloaded letter are useful supporting evidence when raising such a query.
