JEE Mains Rank Analysis 2026

Understand what your CRL rank, category rank, and percentile really mean for your admission chances

CRL Rank vs Category Rank

Your JEE Main scorecard shows multiple ranks: CRL (Common Rank List) rank, and category ranks (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS) if applicable. CRL rank places you among all candidates nationwide regardless of category. Category rank places you only among candidates within your reservation category.

In JoSAA counselling, General/Open category seats are filled strictly by CRL rank. Reserved category seats (OBC-NCL, SC, ST) are filled using the respective category rank, while EWS seats use a separate EWS rank computed among EWS-declared candidates. Knowing which rank applies to which seat type is the first step of any realistic rank analysis.

Turning Your Rank Into a Realistic College List

A rank number by itself doesn't tell you much — context matters. The same rank can mean comfortable admission to a Tier-2 NIT's core branch under Home State quota, and zero chance at a Tier-1 NIT's CSE program under Other State quota. Rank analysis is about mapping your rank against the right quota, category, and branch combination — not comparing it to a single national benchmark.

Start with our JEE Main College Predictor to convert your rank into an actual shortlist, then study the JoSAA Seat Matrix 2026 to see how seat counts (not just reputation) affect your odds at each option. For raw historical numbers, check our JoSAA Cutoffs page.

Frequently Asked Questions – JEE Mains Rank Analysis

Common questions about interpreting your JEE Main rank

1
What is the difference between CRL rank and category rank in JEE Main?
CRL (Common Rank List) rank is your overall rank among all candidates regardless of category. Category rank is your rank only among candidates within your reservation category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS). JoSAA counselling for reserved category seats typically uses category rank, while General/Open seats and the CRL list itself use CRL rank.
2
How do I know if my rank is 'good' for NIT admission?
There's no single cutoff — 'good' depends entirely on which institute, branch, category, and quota (home state vs other state) you're targeting. A rank of 15,000 might comfortably get CSE at a Tier-3 NIT under OS quota, but may not get CSE at a Tier-1 NIT even under HS quota. Use a rank-specific college predictor rather than a general benchmark.
3
Does my JEE Main rank change based on the number of candidates each year?
Yes, indirectly. Your rank is a reflection of your percentile relative to that year's specific candidate pool and difficulty level. A rank of 10,000 in one year is not directly comparable to a rank of 10,000 in another year — always compare using percentile or normalize against that year's total candidates when analyzing trends across years.
4
How much do ranks typically shift between Session 1 and Session 2 of JEE Main?
Many candidates improve their rank in Session 2 since JoSAA considers your best of the two session scores/percentile. It's common to see noticeable movement — sometimes significant — between a candidate's Session 1 provisional rank and their final CRL rank after Session 2 is factored in. Don't finalize counselling strategy based on Session 1 alone if you're appearing for Session 2.
5
What rank bands should I focus my analysis on for realistic planning?
Rather than looking at your exact rank in isolation, study the closing rank band (e.g., within 10-15% above or below last year's closing rank) for your target institute-branch-category-quota combination. This band approach is more realistic than a single hard cutoff, since actual closing ranks shift slightly each year.
