How is JEE Main Rank Calculated?
JEE Main rank is calculated using NTA percentile score, not raw marks. NTA normalizes scores across all sessions using the formula: Percentile = (Candidates scoring equal to or less than you ÷ Total candidates) × 100. Your best percentile across sessions determines your final rank.
The NTA Percentile Formula Explained
JEE Main is conducted in multiple sessions (typically January and April), and each session may have different question sets of varying difficulty. To ensure fairness, NTA uses a statistical process called percentile normalization rather than awarding ranks directly based on raw marks.
The formula used is:
NTA Score = (Number of candidates who scored equal to or less than you in that session ÷ Total candidates in that session) × 100
For example, if 10 lakh students appeared in Session 2 and 9,85,000 scored equal to or less than you, your NTA Score = (9,85,000 ÷ 10,00,000) × 100 = 98.5 percentile.
This means you scored better than 98.5% of all candidates in that session — regardless of whether the paper was harder or easier. Two students with the same raw marks in different sessions can have different percentiles if difficulty levels differ.
Percentile to Rank Conversion (Approximate)
Once NTA Scores are calculated for all sessions, the combined merit list is prepared. A candidate's rank is their position in this all-India list. The table below shows approximate rank ranges for different NTA Score bands (based on ~12 lakh total candidates):
| NTA Score (Percentile) | Approx. Rank Range | Typical Marks (out of 300) |
|---|---|---|
| 99.9+ | 1 – 120 | 270–300 |
| 99.5 – 99.9 | 120 – 600 | 245–270 |
| 99.0 – 99.5 | 600 – 1,200 | 225–245 |
| 98.0 – 99.0 | 1,200 – 2,400 | 200–225 |
| 97.0 – 98.0 | 2,400 – 3,600 | 185–200 |
| 95.0 – 97.0 | 3,600 – 6,000 | 165–185 |
| 90.0 – 95.0 | 6,000 – 12,000 | 140–165 |
| 85.0 – 90.0 | 12,000 – 18,000 | 120–140 |
| 80.0 – 85.0 | 18,000 – 24,000 | 105–120 |
| 75.0 – 80.0 | 24,000 – 30,000 | 90–105 |

How Multi-Session Normalization Works
If JEE Main is held across multiple shifts/days, NTA calculates separate percentiles for each shift. For the final All India Rank (AIR), candidates who appeared in multiple sessions receive their best NTA Score. This score is then used to determine their rank on the combined merit list.
There is no arithmetic averaging of scores across sessions — only the best is taken. This benefits students who improve between sessions and ensures no candidate is disadvantaged by which session they appeared in.
Tie-Breaking Rules
When two candidates have identical NTA Scores, NTA resolves the tie in this order: higher percentile in Mathematics first, then Physics, then Chemistry. If still equal, the candidate with fewer incorrect answers (lower ratio of wrong attempts) gets a better rank.
