JEE Main Home State Quota 2026 – How It Works at NITs

50% NIT seats for home state candidates · Significant rank advantage · State-wise NIT list

Understanding Home State Quota at NITs

Every NIT reserves exactly 50% of its seats in each branch for candidates who are domiciled in the state where the NIT is located. This home state quota is a significant advantage that can help you secure a better branch or a higher-ranked NIT than your all-India rank alone would suggest.

Why Does This Policy Exist? The home state quota ensures that local talent has access to the NIT in their state, supporting regional development. Since NITs are funded partly by state governments and partly by the central government, states get some preference for their students.

How JoSAA Handles Home State:When you fill choices in JoSAA, the system automatically tracks your domicile state. When allotting seats, JoSAA considers you for both home state and other state pools depending on your domicile and the NIT's state. You don't need to manually specify this.

Practical Impact Example: At NIT Trichy (Tamil Nadu), NIT CSE general other-state closing rank in 2025 was approximately 620. The home state (Tamil Nadu) closing rank was approximately 950. This means a Tamil Nadu candidate with rank 800 can get NIT Trichy CSE via home state quota, whereas another candidate with rank 800 from UP cannot.

State-wise NIT Home State Advantage Guide

Here is a state-wise listing of major NITs and the home state advantage for popular branches:

  • Tamil Nadu → NIT Trichy: CSE home state closes ~200–350 ranks higher than general. One of the largest rank advantages in the NIT system.
  • Telangana/AP → NIT Warangal: CSE home state closes ~150–250 ranks higher than other state.
  • Karnataka → NIT Surathkal: CSE home state advantage of ~200–300 ranks.
  • Kerala → NIT Calicut: CSE home state closes ~300–500 ranks higher than other state.
  • Odisha → NIT Rourkela: CSE home state advantage ~500–800 ranks.
  • UP → MNNIT Allahabad: CSE home state advantage can be 1000–2000 ranks due to large UP applicant pool.
  • Rajasthan → NIT Jaipur: CSE home state advantage ~600–1000 ranks.
  • MP → NIT Bhopal: CSE home state closes ~800–1200 ranks higher than other state.
  • Haryana → NIT Kurukshetra: Home state advantage ~400–700 ranks for CSE.
  • HP → NIT Hamirpur: Due to smaller applicant pool from HP, the home state cutoff is sometimes more relaxed by 1000–2000 ranks.

What If My State Has No NIT?Several states (Delhi, Chandigarh, Goa) don't have a dedicated NIT. Candidates from these states compete in the other state pool at all NITs. Delhi candidates benefit from DTU and NSIT under state counselling instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JEE Main home state quota at NITs

1
What is home state quota at NITs?
50% of seats in each branch at every NIT are reserved as 'Home State' seats for candidates whose state of domicile matches the state in which the NIT is located. The remaining 50% are 'Other State' seats open to all. This means NIT Trichy has 50% seats for Tamil Nadu domicile holders and 50% for candidates from all other states.
2
How is home state determined for NIT admission?
Home state is determined by the state of domicile declared during JEE Main registration. This is typically the state where you passed Class 12 or where you have permanent residency. You cannot change your home state after registration. The domicile state in JEE Main records is used by JoSAA automatically.
3
By how many ranks does home state quota help?
The rank advantage varies by NIT and branch. For top NITs like NIT Trichy and NIT Warangal, home state CSE closes roughly 200–400 ranks higher (numerically) than other state quota. For mid-tier NITs, the gap can be 500–2000 ranks. For newer NITs with fewer applicants from the home state, the advantage may be smaller.
4
Which states have more than one NIT?
Several states have multiple NITs: Andhra Pradesh (NIT Warangal + NIT Andhra Pradesh), Karnataka (NIT Surathkal + NIT Karnataka is same), UP (MNNIT Allahabad + NIT Uttarakhand if from UP?). Note that some states have NITs shared between them historically. Karnataka candidates can claim home state at NIT Surathkal; Tamil Nadu candidates at NIT Trichy.
5
Can I use home state quota if I passed Class 12 from one state but have domicile in another?
JoSAA follows NTA JEE Main registration data for home state. NTA typically considers the state where you completed Class 12 (or Class 10 and 12 both) as the home state. If you passed Class 12 from a different state than your permanent domicile, the Class 12 state typically takes precedence. Disputes are resolved on a case-by-case basis with documentation.
