JEE Main Exam Day Tips and Checklist
Everything you need to know for exam day success — what to carry, what to avoid, how to manage time during the exam, and what to do if something unexpected happens.
Why Exam Day Preparation Matters as Much as Content Preparation
After months or years of content preparation, exam day logistics and mindset can significantly impact your actual performance, independent of how well you know the syllabus. Simple issues — forgetting a required document, arriving late due to unfamiliarity with the exam center location, or poor time management within the exam itself — have derailed otherwise well-prepared candidates.
Treating exam day preparation as a distinct, deliberate part of your overall strategy, not an afterthought, reduces avoidable risk and lets your actual subject knowledge translate more reliably into your final score. This means preparing your documents, confirming logistics, and mentally rehearsing your in-exam time management approach well before the exam date itself.
Exam Day Checklist
Printed admit card
Carry a clear, printed copy — not just a digital version on your phone, as phones are typically not allowed inside.
Valid original photo ID
Aadhaar, school ID, passport, or another NTA-accepted ID matching the details on your admit card exactly.
Passport-size photograph
The same photograph uploaded during registration, if specifically required per your admit card instructions.
PwD certificate (if applicable)
Required if you've applied for PwD-related exam accommodations like extra time or a scribe.
Confirm exam center location in advance
Visit or map the route to your exam center a day or two before, accounting for traffic and travel time, to avoid last-minute stress.
Arrive well before the reporting time
Exam centers typically close entry well before the actual exam start time — arriving late, even by a few minutes past the gate closure, can mean disqualification for that session.
In-Exam Time Management Strategy
First pass (quick scan)
Go through all questions quickly, answering ones you're immediately confident about and mentally flagging harder ones — don't get stuck on any single question in this pass.
Second pass (moderate difficulty)
Return to flagged questions of moderate difficulty, working through them methodically with the time saved from the quick first pass.
Final pass (hardest questions)
Use remaining time for the most difficult questions, being mindful of negative marking — skip a question entirely if you're genuinely unsure rather than guessing randomly.
Reserve buffer time at the end
Keep 5-10 minutes at the end to review your answers and ensure you haven't made any avoidable marking errors, especially for numerical-value type questions.
