Branch-wise first admitted CRL ranks for all 23 IITs through JoSAA counselling

JEE Advanced 2026 result is on June 1, 2026. JoSAA 2026 counselling follows in June–July 2026. Opening ranks below are from JoSAA 2025 Round 6 (final) data — the best available reference until 2026 counselling completes.

Opening Rank vs Closing Rank

Opening rank is the rank of the first student admitted to a branch (lowest rank number = best student). Closing rank is the rank of the last student admitted (highest number). The closing rank is what you should compare your rank against when assessing chances — not the opening rank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JEE Advanced opening ranks, IIT cutoffs, and JoSAA counselling.

1
What is opening rank in JEE Advanced IIT admissions?
Opening rank (also called first admitted rank) is the CRL (Common Rank List) rank of the first student admitted to a particular IIT branch in a given category. For example, IIT Bombay CSE opening rank of 1 means the rank-1 holder in JEE Advanced 2025 took that seat. Opening rank tells you the best rank that entered; the closing rank tells you the worst rank admitted — use the closing rank to assess realistic chances.
2
What is the opening rank for IIT Bombay CSE?
IIT Bombay CSE (Computer Science and Engineering) consistently has the lowest opening rank among all IITs — typically rank 1 in the Common Rank List (CRL). In JoSAA 2025, the opening rank for IIT Bombay CSE General/OPEN Gender Neutral was rank 1, making it the most coveted seat in IIT admissions. The closing rank was around 60–75.
3
What rank is needed for IIT Delhi CSE?
In JoSAA 2025, IIT Delhi CSE (General, Gender Neutral) had an opening rank of approximately 3. The closing rank was around 100–130. To have a strong chance at IIT Delhi CSE, you should target a JEE Advanced rank under 100 in the General category.
4
Which IIT has the highest (worst) opening rank for CSE?
Among the newer IITs, IIT Palakkad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Dharwad, and IIT Jammu tend to have the highest opening ranks for CSE — typically in the 2,500–3,500 range in CRL. This means candidates with ranks in this range can access CSE at newer IITs. In contrast, top IITs like IIT Bombay, Delhi, and Madras have opening ranks under 20 for CSE.
5
What is CRL in JEE Advanced rank list?
CRL stands for Common Rank List — the main unreserved rank list in JEE Advanced. It includes all qualified candidates regardless of category. CRL is used for General (OPEN) category seats. Separately, category-wise rank lists (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, GEN-EWS) determine seats reserved for those groups. A candidate's CRL rank is typically higher (worse number) than their category rank.
6
Do female candidates have lower opening ranks in IITs?
Yes. IITs have supernumerary Female Only seats — additional seats over the base intake reserved exclusively for female candidates. These seats have separate opening and closing ranks which are typically higher (worse) than the Gender Neutral pool because fewer female candidates compete. For example, IIT Bombay CSE Female Only opening rank in 2025 was around 10–15, versus rank 1 for Gender Neutral.
7
When will JEE Advanced 2026 opening ranks be published?
JEE Advanced 2026 opening ranks will be available after JoSAA 2026 counselling rounds, which begin in June 2026 following the result on June 1, 2026. Round 1 allotment results (expected mid-June 2026) will show the first set of opening ranks. Final data for all 6 rounds will be available by July 2026. The data shown here is from JoSAA 2025 and is the best current reference.
8
Can I get any IIT with a rank of 10,000?
Yes. With a JEE Advanced CRL rank of 10,000, you can get admission to newer IITs in various branches. In JoSAA 2025, branches like Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering at newer IITs (IIT Tirupati, IIT Dharwad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Jammu, etc.) had opening ranks in the 8,000–15,000 range. CSE at newer IITs typically closes around 3,000–5,000. Use our IIT College Predictor for accurate branch-wise predictions.
