What Drives Expected Cutoff Movement

Closing ranks rise across rounds mainly because higher-rank candidates allotted lower-preference seats in Round 1 continue to float or slide toward better options in later rounds, vacating their earlier seat for someone with a (numerically) higher rank. This is why the "final" round closing rank is always equal to or higher than Round 1's for almost every institute-branch combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JEE Advanced expected cutoff 2026

1
What was the IIT Bombay closing rank in JoSAA 2026?
IIT Bombay held the best (lowest) closing rank among all IITs throughout JoSAA 2026, staying in the 65–67 CRL range from Round 1 through Round 5 — typically for its CSE programme.
2
What is the overall average closing rank across all IITs for 2026?
Across all 323 tracked IIT institute-branch-quota combinations in JoSAA 2026, the average closing rank rose from about 7,443 in Round 1 to about 8,369 by Round 5, as seats progressively filled through floating and sliding candidates.
3
What was the closing rank for IIT CSE programmes specifically?
For IIT CSE across all 26 IITs offering the programme, the average closing rank moved from about 2,982 in Round 1 to about 3,266 by Round 5 of JoSAA 2026 — reflecting consistently high demand for CSE even at newer IITs.
4
Which IIT had the highest (weakest) closing rank in 2026?
IIT (BHU) Varanasi recorded the highest closing rank among IITs, moving from about 26,220 in Round 1 to about 28,480 by Round 5 — typically for lower-demand branches, reflecting it being a relatively newer-entrant / less sought-after campus-branch combination compared to older IITs.
5
How reliable are 'expected cutoff' figures before JoSAA 2027 starts?
Expected cutoffs are built from the actual, concluded JoSAA 2026 round-wise data and prior-year trends. They are a strong statistical reference for the next cycle but are not official — actual cutoffs depend on seat matrix revisions, applicant volume, and category-wise reservation changes each year.
6
Do expected cutoffs differ by category (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS)?
Yes significantly. General/CRL cutoffs are the tightest, while SC, ST, OBC-NCL, and EWS cutoffs are comparatively relaxed per the reservation percentages mandated for each category. Use our JEE Advanced College Predictor to see your own category-specific estimate.
