CSAB 2026 Eligibility Criteria – Who Can Apply?

Complete guide to CSAB 2026 eligibility — from JEE Main rank requirements to JoSAA participation rules, Class 12 criteria, and category-specific conditions.

Core CSAB 2026 Eligibility Checklist

To participate in CSAB 2026, a candidate must satisfy all five of the following conditions. Failure to meet any single condition results in ineligibility:

1

Valid JEE Main 2026 Rank (Paper 1 for B.Tech)

You must have appeared in JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) and obtained a valid CRL (Common Rank List) rank. Ranks from 2024 or 2025 are not valid. Appearing in either the January 2026 or April 2026 session qualifies you — both are not required. The better NTA score from either session is used to compute your rank.

2

Must Have Registered for JoSAA 2026

CSAB participation requires that you have registered for JoSAA 2026 — even if you were not allotted any seat. The JoSAA 2026 registration window opened June 2, 2026 (after JEE Advanced results) and closed June 11. Missing this window means losing both JoSAA and CSAB eligibility for 2026.

3

Must NOT Have Physically Reported to a JoSAA Institute

If you were allotted a seat in JoSAA and physically reported to the institute (walked in for document verification and completed the process), you are permanently ineligible for CSAB 2026. Paying the JoSAA acceptance fee alone does not disqualify you — only physical reporting does.

4

Class 12 Passed or Appearing with PCM + English

You must have passed (or be appearing in) Class 12 from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English as subjects. For final NIT/IIIT admission, you must have secured at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or be in the top 20 percentile of your board. This criterion applies at the time of institute reporting.

5

No Upper Age Limit for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs

Unlike some other examinations, there is no upper age limit for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through CSAB. Candidates of any age who have cleared JEE Main 2026 and meet other criteria can participate. The minimum age is 17 years as on October 1 of the admission year.

Special CSAB NEUT Round – Eligibility for NE States and UTs

In addition to the two standard CSAB Special Rounds (SR1 and SR2), CSAB conducts a special NEUT Round(North East & Union Territory round) for candidates from specific regions. This is an additional opportunity exclusively for these candidates, with seats over and above the regular CSAB matrix.

Who Qualifies for CSAB NEUT?

North-East States:

AssamMeghalayaTripuraMizoramManipurNagalandArunachal PradeshSikkim

Union Territories:

Andaman & NicobarLakshadweepDadra & Nagar HaveliDaman & DiuChandigarhPuducherryJ&KLadakh

To claim NEUT eligibility, you must be a bonafide permanent resident of a qualifying NE state or UT and must have declared this during your JoSAA 2026 registration. You will need a valid domicile/residence certificate from the respective state or UT government at the time of institute reporting.

Category-Specific Documents for CSAB 2026

If you are applying under a reserved category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, PwD), you must submit the appropriate certificate at the time of institute reporting. Submitting an incorrect or expired certificate results in admission cancellation and loss of the reserved seat.

CategoryCertificate RequiredValidity
OBC-NCLOBC Non-Creamy Layer certificate from competent authorityMust be issued in 2026 (current year)
SCScheduled Caste caste certificatePermanent — no annual renewal needed
STScheduled Tribe caste certificatePermanent — no annual renewal needed
EWSEconomically Weaker Section income & asset certificateMust be issued in 2026 (current FY)

Important for OBC-NCL and EWS candidates: These certificates must be from the current financial year (2025–26). Certificates issued in 2024–25 or earlier are not accepted. Obtain fresh certificates well in advance of the CSAB reporting deadline.

Who is NOT Eligible for CSAB 2026?

  • ✗Candidates who physically reported to a JoSAA 2026 allotted institute and completed document verification
  • ✗Candidates who did not register for JoSAA 2026 at all (even with a valid JEE Main rank)
  • ✗Candidates using a JEE Main rank from 2024, 2025, or any year other than 2026
  • ✗Candidates who appeared only in JEE Main Paper 2A (B.Arch) or Paper 2B (B.Planning) and not in Paper 1 (B.Tech)
  • ✗Foreign nationals who are not NRIs, PIOs, or OCIs (they cannot participate in CSAB; DASA is their route)
  • ✗Candidates who have already taken final admission to an NIT/IIIT/GFTI in a previous year through JoSAA or CSAB and are seeking re-admission

How to Check Your CSAB 2026 Eligibility on csab.nic.in

CSAB does not have a separate eligibility checker tool. Your eligibility is automatically determined when you attempt to log in to the CSAB portal. Here is what to do:

  1. Visit csab.nic.in — CSAB registration closed August 3, 2026; both the SR1 result (Aug 6) and the SR2 result (Aug 12) are out, and CSAB 2026 counselling is now complete
  2. Log in using your JEE Main 2026 Application Number and Password
  3. If you are eligible, you will see the CSAB registration form
  4. If the portal shows "not eligible" or does not allow login, it means: (a) you did not register for JoSAA, (b) you physically reported to a JoSAA institute, or (c) there is a data discrepancy — contact CSAB helpdesk in that case
  5. Complete the CSAB registration, verify your personal details and category, and fill your choice list
CSAB Helpdesk: For eligibility-related queries, contact the CSAB helpline or email listed on csab.nic.in. Keep your JEE Main application number, JoSAA registration number, and JoSAA allotment status ready when contacting support.

Frequently Asked Questions – CSAB 2026 Eligibility

Common questions about who can apply for CSAB 2026 and what conditions must be met

1
What is the minimum JEE Main rank required to participate in CSAB 2026?
There is no official minimum rank cutoff for CSAB registration — any candidate with a valid JEE Main 2026 rank who meets other eligibility conditions can register. However, practically, candidates with JEE Main CRL rank above 800,000–900,000 have near-zero chance of getting any CSAB allotment, as even the least competitive GFTIs typically close around that rank. For any realistic chance at an NIT, your rank should be within the last closing rank observed in CSAB 2025 for that institute — check csab.nic.in for 2025 opening and closing ranks.
2
Is Class 12 75% aggregate mandatory for CSAB 2026 or is it only for final admission?
The 75% aggregate rule (or top 20 percentile in your board) is for final admission, not for CSAB registration or seat allotment. You can register for CSAB and receive a seat allotment even if your Class 12 results are not yet declared or you are unsure of meeting the 75% criterion. However, at the time of physical reporting to the institute, you must present proof of meeting the 75% criterion (or top 20 percentile). Failure to meet this at reporting leads to cancellation of admission. SC/ST candidates have a relaxed criterion of 65%.
3
Can students from private boards (CBSE, state boards, ICSE) all participate in CSAB 2026?
Yes. Students from any recognized board in India — CBSE, ICSE, state boards, open schooling (NIOS), international baccalaureate (IB), etc. — can participate in CSAB 2026, provided they meet the core eligibility criteria: valid JEE Main 2026 rank, JoSAA 2026 registration, Class 12 passed/appearing with PCM+English, and not having physically reported to a JoSAA institute.
4
What is CSAB NEUT and who qualifies for it?
CSAB NEUT (North East and Union Territories) is a special seat reservation round within CSAB for candidates from eight North-East states (Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim) and all Union Territories. NEUT seats are allocated over and above the regular CSAB seat matrix — they are not cut from the general seat pool. To qualify, you must declare your NEUT category during JoSAA registration and be a bonafide resident of a qualifying NE state or UT. The NEUT round is conducted after CSAB SR1 and SR2.
5
I did not get allotted in JoSAA Round 5, but I was allotted in Round 5 and rejected it. Can I do CSAB?
Yes. Your CSAB eligibility is determined by your status at the end of JoSAA — after Round 5. If you were allotted a seat in Round 5 but rejected it (by not paying the acceptance fee or withdrawing before physical reporting), you are eligible for CSAB 2026. The fact that you were allotted in round 6 does not change this — what matters is that you did not physically report to any JoSAA institute.

OBC/EWS Candidates

Your OBC-NCL or EWS certificate must be from the current financial year (2025–26). Get it issued well before July 2026 to avoid last-minute issues during CSAB reporting.

NE State & UT Candidates

Check your NEUT eligibility during JoSAA registration — it must be declared there. The NEUT round gives an additional chance at NIT seats beyond SR1 and SR2.
