COMEDK 2026 Choice Filling vs JoSAA
How COMEDK UGET's counselling mechanics for Karnataka's private engineering colleges differ from JoSAA's multi-round float/freeze system for IITs, NITs, and IIITs.
Two Different Systems, Often Confused
Candidates preparing for engineering admissions in India frequently encounter both COMEDK and JoSAA, and it's easy to assume their counselling mechanics work the same way just because both are "rank-based, round-wise" processes. In practice, they differ meaningfully in scope, seat-locking terminology, and process complexity, even though the underlying goal — matching candidate rank and preference to an available seat — is the same.
COMEDK (Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka) conducts UGET counselling exclusively for roughly 150+ private engineering colleges in Karnataka, using a candidate's COMEDK UGET rank. There is no Karnataka domicile requirement, making it accessible to candidates from anywhere in India. JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority), by contrast, conducts centralized counselling for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs across the entire country, using JEE Main rank (for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs) and JEE Advanced rank (for IITs).
Because JoSAA allots seats at centrally funded technical institutes with far more complex seat matrices — spanning Home State/Other State quotas at NITs, multiple reservation categories, and gender-neutral vs female-only pools — its counselling mechanics are correspondingly more elaborate than COMEDK's, which deals with a single state's private-college ecosystem.
Key Procedural Differences at a Glance
| Aspect | COMEDK UGET | JoSAA |
|---|---|---|
| Conducting Body | COMEDK (private consortium) | JoSAA (govt-mandated central body) |
| Colleges Covered | 150+ private colleges in Karnataka only | IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs — nationwide |
| Rank Used | COMEDK UGET rank (own entrance exam) | JEE Main rank (NITs/IIITs/GFTIs); JEE Advanced rank (IITs) |
| Domicile Requirement | None — open to all India | None for central seats; Home State quota applies at NITs |
| Number of Rounds | Typically up to 4 rounds | Up to 6 rounds, then CSAB for leftover seats |
| Seat-Locking Mechanics | Simpler Accept/Upgrade-style choice each round | Explicit 3-way Freeze / Float / Slide each round |
| Quota Structure | Convener Quota via COMEDK; NRI/Management quota outside portal | Home State / Other State quota at NITs; Gender-Neutral / Female-only pools |
| Post-Rounds Process | Spot admission / institute-level for leftover seats | Handover to CSAB for remaining CFTI seats |
Understanding JoSAA's Float / Freeze / Slide System
JoSAA's defining feature is its explicit three-way choice after every round: Freeze locks in the current seat and exits the candidate from further rounds entirely; Float keeps the current seat as a guaranteed backup while the candidate remains eligible for a better institute or branch in the next round; and Slide keeps the candidate within the same institute while trying for a better branch there specifically. This three-way distinction gives JoSAA candidates fine-grained control over how aggressively they pursue upgrades across up to 6 rounds.
COMEDK's process, while conceptually similar in that it also allows candidates to try for upgrades across rounds, does not use this exact three-term framework. Its round-wise options are generally structured around a simpler Accept-and-continue vs Accept-and-exit choice, without a direct equivalent to JoSAA's institute-specific "Slide" option. Candidates moving between the two systems — for instance, participating in both simultaneously — should read each portal's instructions carefully each round rather than assuming the terminology and mechanics carry over.
Which Process Suits Which Candidate?
Focus your primary strategy on JoSAA, since it's the only route to centrally funded technical institutes. Use COMEDK as a parallel backup if you're also open to strong private Karnataka colleges.
COMEDK is the direct and often only route to colleges like RV College of Engineering, MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology, BMS College of Engineering, and PES University — JoSAA does not cover these.
Register for both. There's no conflict in parallel participation, and comparing your actual allotted college-branch combination in each system is more useful than choosing one process over the other in advance.
COMEDK UGET is a separate exam and counselling track entirely — you can still pursue private Karnataka colleges through COMEDK even without a usable JEE Main rank for JoSAA.
