JoSAA 2027 PwD Candidates Guide – Reservation & Certificate Mechanism

5% horizontal reservation, disability certificate rules, and accessible infrastructure — the stable mechanism explained.

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 has not begun and no official seat numbers or dates exist as of October 2026. This page explains the stable PwD reservation mechanism used in past cycles (2024–2026) as an evergreen guide. Confirm exact 2027 details via the official brochure once released.

PwD Reservation: How It's Expected to Work

Persons with Disabilities (PwD) have received 5% horizontal reservation at all participating IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs across recent JoSAA cycles. As per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, a "benchmark disability" of at least 40% has qualified a candidate for this reservation — a threshold expected to remain stable for 2027.

CategoryPwD Sub-category
General/OpenPwD-GEN
OBC-NCLPwD-OBC-NCL
SCPwD-SC
STPwD-ST
EWSPwD-EWS

A PwD candidate from an OBC-NCL background, for instance, is considered under PwD-OBC-NCL — they do not lose their original vertical category benefit. This layered structure has remained stable and is expected to continue for 2027.

Disability Certificate Requirements

Accepted Certificate Authorities (based on past cycles)

  • - Medical Board of a Government Hospital (District Civil Hospital or above)
  • - Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or authorized representative
  • - Composite Regional Centers (CRCs) run by MSJE

Historically NOT Accepted

  • - Private hospital certificates
  • - Certificates not in RPwD Act 2016 prescribed format
  • - Certificates not stating the percentage disability numerically

Accessible Infrastructure Expectation

All IITs and NITs are required under the RPwD Act to provide accessible campuses — ramps, accessible hostels, and academic support. Actual implementation has varied by institute in past cycles. It's recommended to contact the disability coordinator at your allotted institute before joining to understand specific accommodations, a practice that remains sound for 2027.

1
Will PwD reservation continue in JoSAA 2027?
This is reasonably expected. PwD reservation is based on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, a stable legislative framework that has applied consistently across recent JoSAA cycles including 2026. The 5% horizontal reservation structure is expected to carry over to 2027, though always confirm against the current year's brochure.
2
What is the minimum disability percentage required?
Based on the RPwD Act 2016 and its consistent application in past cycles, a minimum of 40% 'benchmark disability' is required to be eligible for PwD reservation. This threshold has not changed in recent years and is expected to remain the same for 2027, though this should still be verified against the official brochure.
3
How does horizontal PwD reservation work?
PwD reservation is horizontal — it applies across all vertical categories (General/Open, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS). A PwD candidate from, say, an OBC-NCL background competes within the PwD-OBC-NCL pool and does not lose their underlying category benefit. This structural principle has been stable across years and is expected to continue for 2027.
4
Who issues the disability certificate for JoSAA?
Based on the consistent requirement in past cycles, the certificate must come from a competent medical authority under the RPwD Act — typically a Government Hospital Medical Board, Chief Medical Officer, or Composite Regional Center. Private hospital certificates have not been accepted. This requirement is expected to remain unchanged for 2027.
5
What accommodations are typically available during JEE and JoSAA?
In past cycles, PwD candidates with benchmark disability have been allowed a scribe and extra time during JEE Main/Advanced, plus physical accessibility assistance during JoSAA reporting. IITs and NITs are required to provide accessible infrastructure. These provisions have been consistent and are expected to continue for 2027, though it's wise to confirm specifics with your allotted institute.
