JoSAA 2027 Choice Filling for Female Supernumerary Seats

How the FS seat mechanism is expected to work and how women candidates should plan their choice list, based on the stable process used in recent cycles.

Disclaimer: No official JoSAA 2027 seat matrix or brochure exists as of October 2026. The number of supernumerary seats and exact institute-wise figures for 2027 are unknown. This page explains the eligibility mechanism and choice filling strategy based on how FS seats have worked in recent cycles — verify against the official 2027 brochure once released.

What Are Female Supernumerary Seats?

Female Supernumerary (FS) seats are additional seats created specifically for women candidates at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, over and above the regular gender-neutral seat matrix. Because these seats are "supernumerary" — added on top rather than carved out of the existing matrix — they have not reduced the number of gender-neutral seats available to any candidate, male or female.

This scheme was introduced to address a historically low proportion of women in engineering institutes and has been progressively implemented and adjusted over several past JoSAA cycles. It is expected to continue in a similar form for 2027, though exact numbers per institute will only be confirmed when the official seat matrix is released.

Expected Choice Filling Strategy for Women Candidates

Add both GN and FS versions of each programme

For every institute-branch you want, add both the Gender-Neutral choice and the Female-only/Supernumerary choice.

Order based on which has the better closing rank for you

FS seats have historically had a rank advantage at many institutes — but this varies by programme, so order based on actual past-year data once available.

Include home-state quota versions where relevant

At NITs, both GN and FS seats are typically split further by home-state/other-state quota — add all relevant combinations.

Don't skip GN seats assuming FS will always be better

At some highly competitive programmes, GN cutoffs can occasionally be close to or better than FS for certain institutes — always add both to be safe.

JoSAA 2027 Female Supernumerary Seats – FAQs

Common questions about the FS seat mechanism expected for JoSAA 2027

1
What is the Female Supernumerary (FS) scheme in JoSAA, and will it continue in 2027?
The Female Supernumerary scheme was introduced to increase female enrolment at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs by adding extra ('supernumerary') seats specifically for women, on top of the existing seat matrix — meaning these additional seats do not reduce the number of gender-neutral seats available. This scheme has been in place and expanded over several past cycles. There is no indication it will be discontinued for 2027, but official confirmation will only come with the JoSAA 2027 brochure.
2
Do IITs have a similar supernumerary scheme for women?
IITs have historically followed their own female-focused initiatives under the JEE Advanced / IIT seat matrix, which have evolved over the years as IITs worked toward improving gender diversity. The exact mechanism for 2027 at IITs should be verified separately once the JEE Advanced 2027 and JoSAA 2027 brochures are released.
3
How should female candidates order choices between FS and Gender-Neutral seats?
Based on the strategy that has worked consistently in past cycles, female candidates should add both the Gender-Neutral (GN) version and the Female-Only/Supernumerary version of each programme they want, since FS seats have generally had a meaningful rank advantage. Placing the FS choice above or alongside the GN choice (depending on which has the better closing rank for your profile) maximizes your chances.
4
Does applying under the FS quota affect my eligibility for Gender-Neutral seats?
No — in every past cycle, female candidates have remained eligible for both Gender-Neutral and Female-only/Supernumerary seats simultaneously. There has been no need to choose one over the other; you can and should add both types of choices to your JoSAA list.
5
Will the number of supernumerary seats in 2027 be the same as 2026?
Not necessarily. The number of supernumerary seats at individual institutes can change year to year as it has in several past cycles. Exact 2027 numbers will only be available once JoSAA publishes the official seat matrix for that year — this page describes the eligibility and choice filling mechanism, not the quantity of seats.
