SC/ST/OBC/EWS Category Certificate for JoSAA 2027

Expected certificate requirements based on the stable process JoSAA has followed across recent counselling cycles.

Disclaimer: JoSAA has not released an official 2027 brochure as of October 2026. Certificate requirements described here reflect the consistent pattern followed in JoSAA 2024–2026 cycles. Always verify exact requirements against the official JoSAA 2027 brochure once released.

Category Certificates — The Stable Framework

JoSAA counselling has consistently followed Government of India reservation policy: SC (15%), ST (7.5%), OBC-NCL (27%), EWS (10%), and PwD (5% horizontal across all categories). Each reserved category requires a specific certificate to avail the benefit, and this structure has remained stable for several years. There is no indication that JoSAA 2027 will deviate from this framework, though official confirmation will only come with the 2027 brochure.

The most common certificate-related issues in past cycles have been: using an outdated OBC-NCL certificate, submitting a state OBC certificate at a central institute, missing the "Non-Creamy Layer" wording, not obtaining an EWS certificate before registration, and name-spelling mismatches between the certificate and Class 10 records. Candidates preparing for 2027 can avoid all of these by starting the certificate process early and matching the exact format used in recent years.

Expected Certificate Requirements

SC Certificate
State government; tehsildar/SDM; generally no expiry for SC status (based on past cycles)
ST Certificate
State government; tehsildar/SDM; generally no expiry for ST status
OBC-NCL Certificate
Expected to require current financial year issuance; must state 'Non-Creamy Layer'; Central OBC list
EWS Certificate
Expected to require current financial year issuance; family income below ₹8 lakh/year (verify current threshold); tehsildar/SDM

Central vs State OBC List — A Stable but Often-Missed Distinction

NITs, IITs, and IIITs are central government institutions and recognize only the Central OBC list (maintained by the National Commission for Backward Classes). Many states include communities in their state OBC list that are not present in the central list — this mismatch has consistently been one of the biggest sources of confusion for candidates across past JoSAA cycles, and there's no reason to expect this will change for 2027.

To verify in advance: check the NCBC website (ncbc.nic.in) to confirm whether your community appears in the Central OBC list for your state. If it does, ensure your certificate explicitly references the Central OBC list. If it doesn't, you will be treated as General/OPEN category at NITs/IITs, and should plan your JoSAA 2027 choice list accordingly.

Category Certificate JoSAA 2027 – FAQs

Common questions about expected SC/ST/OBC/EWS category certificate requirements for JoSAA 2027

1
What category certificates will be required for JoSAA 2027?
JoSAA has consistently required SC, ST, OBC-NCL, and EWS certificates (plus PwD certificates where applicable) for candidates claiming reservation benefits. This structure follows Government of India reservation policy (SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL 27%, EWS 10%, PwD 5% horizontal) and has not changed across recent cycles. There is no indication this will change for JoSAA 2027, but always confirm against the official 2027 brochure once released.
2
Will the OBC-NCL certificate for JoSAA 2027 need to be from the current financial year?
Based on the consistent requirement across past cycles, yes — the OBC-NCL certificate has needed to be issued within the financial year of admission, not an older certificate. This is the single most common certificate-related rejection reason in past years, so candidates likely applying under OBC-NCL for 2027 should plan to obtain a fresh certificate close to the admission cycle rather than reuse an old one.
3
Does the Central vs State OBC list distinction apply to JoSAA 2027 too?
This distinction has been a stable and important feature of every past JoSAA cycle: NITs, IITs, and IIITs are central institutions and recognize only the Central OBC list (maintained by NCBC), not state-specific OBC lists. If your community is only on your state's OBC list and not the central list, you cannot claim OBC-NCL reservation at these institutes. This mechanism is expected to remain unchanged for 2027 — verify your community's status at ncbc.nic.in.
4
What income limit is expected for the EWS certificate in JoSAA 2027?
The EWS criteria have remained stable since EWS reservation was introduced: family annual income below ₹8 lakh, with additional asset conditions (land, residential property limits). This is a national policy threshold, not something JoSAA sets independently, so it is unlikely to change materially for 2027, though you should verify the current applicable threshold closer to the admission cycle.
5
When should I start arranging my category certificate for JoSAA 2027?
Based on the pattern in past cycles, it's advisable to start the certificate process (especially OBC-NCL and EWS, which need current-year issuance) well before JEE results are expected, since government offices can take 1–3 weeks to process these certificates and demand spikes during the admission season. Don't wait for JoSAA registration to open before starting the paperwork.
