JoSAA 2027 – Best Time to Fill and Lock Choices
A phase-by-phase timing strategy based on the stable choice filling and mock allotment pattern seen in recent JoSAA cycles.
Disclaimer: No official JoSAA 2027 schedule exists as of October 2026. This page describes the stable timing strategy (fill early, use mocks, lock late with buffer) that has applied across recent JoSAA cycles. Exact 2027 dates will be confirmed once JoSAA releases its official brochure — check josaa.nic.in directly.
The Stable Three-Phase Strategy
Regardless of the exact 2027 dates, the underlying timing strategy that has worked across recent JoSAA cycles follows three phases:
Phase 1 — Early Window: Research & Initial Fill
- •Register as soon as the portal opens.
- •Start filling choices immediately — choices can be saved without locking.
- •Research recent years' (2024–2026) closing ranks for your target institutes.
- •Use the College Predictor to shortlist realistic options for your rank and category.
- •Build an initial list of 50–80 choices ordered by genuine preference.
Phase 2 — Mid Window: Review Using Mock Allotments
- •Check Mock Allotment 1 once available and evaluate the preview seat.
- •Reorder choices if the mock result doesn't match your expectations.
- •Check Mock Allotment 2 (typically more accurate as more candidates have registered by then).
- •Ensure home-state quota and category-specific choices are correctly placed.
Phase 3 — Final Hours: Pre-Lock Checklist & Lock
- •Do a complete top-to-bottom review of your final list.
- •Confirm category-specific entries (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwD) are correct.
- •Lock with a safety buffer of several hours before the deadline — don't wait until the last moment.
- •Save a screenshot or PDF of your locked list as a personal record.
Why "Lock Late, Not Last Minute" Is the Right Approach
Locking too early denies you the benefit of mock allotment feedback, which is specifically designed to help you catch ordering mistakes before they become permanent. On the other hand, waiting until the literal last few minutes before the deadline risks running into portal slowdowns from heavy simultaneous traffic — a pattern that has repeated in essentially every past JoSAA cycle.
The safest approach, consistent across years, is to complete your final review and lock with several hours of buffer remaining, rather than racing the clock in the final minutes.
