JoSAA 2026 – Which JEE Main Session Rank Is Used for Counselling?

Clear answer to the most common JEE Main rank confusion — best session, automatic selection, and how the final rank card works.

The Simple Answer: JoSAA Always Uses Your Best JEE Main Rank

JEE Main 2026 is conducted in two sessions — January and April. Many candidates appear in both sessions hoping to improve their rank. The question of which session's rank is used for JoSAA counselling is a major source of confusion, but the answer is straightforward:

JoSAA uses the BEST NTA score across all sessions.

NTA automatically issues a single consolidated rank card. You do not need to choose or apply for a specific session.

After both sessions are complete and final answer keys are published, NTA processes every candidate's scores. For candidates who appeared in multiple sessions, NTA identifies the highest NTA score achieved across any session. This best NTA score is then used to compute the final JEE Main CRL (Common Rank List) rank.

The result is a single Final Rank Card issued by NTA — distinct from session-specific scorecards — which shows your final consolidated rank. This is the rank you use everywhere: JoSAA registration, CSAB, state counselling that accepts JEE Main rank, and so on.

How the Consolidation Works: Step by Step

Step 1

You appear in January Session 1

NTA issues a scorecard showing your January session NTA score (e.g., 94.5 percentile). This is session-specific and NOT your final rank yet.

Step 2

You appear in April Session 2

NTA issues another scorecard showing your April session NTA score (e.g., 96.2 percentile). Again, this is session-specific.

Step 3

NTA identifies the best NTA score

After both sessions conclude, NTA automatically compares your January (94.5) and April (96.2) scores. April is higher, so 96.2 percentile is used for rank computation.

Step 4

NTA computes the final CRL rank

The best NTA score (96.2 percentile) is used to calculate your final JEE Main CRL rank across all candidates. This rank is published on the NTA JEE Main website.

Step 5

Final Rank Card is issued

NTA releases the Final Rank Card showing your consolidated rank. Download this from jeemain.nta.nic.in. This rank is what you enter during JoSAA registration.

Step 6

JoSAA fetches this rank automatically

When you register on josaa.nic.in with your JEE Main Application Number, the system fetches your final consolidated rank from NTA's database. No manual entry of rank is needed.

Common Misconceptions Cleared Up

Myth: I need to select which session rank to use in JoSAA

Fact: JoSAA automatically fetches your final consolidated rank from NTA. There is no option to select a session. The system has one rank for you — the best one NTA computed.

Myth: Both session ranks appear separately in JoSAA and I can choose

Fact: Only your final consolidated rank (from the Final Rank Card) is visible in JoSAA. Session-wise scores are on your session scorecards, not in JoSAA's system.

Myth: If my April rank was worse than January, my rank worsened

Fact: Appearing in April (or any subsequent session) can only maintain or improve your rank — never worsen it. NTA always uses the best session score. A worse April performance is simply ignored.

Myth: The rank on my session scorecard is my JoSAA rank

Fact: Session scorecards show session-specific NTA scores, not final ranks. The official final rank is on the separate Final Rank Card. Use the Final Rank Card for all counselling purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JEE Main session rank and JoSAA counselling

1
Which JEE Main 2026 session rank is used in JoSAA counselling?
JoSAA uses the best NTA score (percentile) and corresponding rank across all JEE Main 2026 sessions. NTA calculates a consolidated final rank for each candidate after all sessions are complete, taking the highest NTA score achieved in any session. This final consolidated rank is what appears on the JEE Main rank card and what JoSAA uses for seat allocation. You do not choose which session rank to use — the system picks the best one automatically.
2
Do I need to manually select which session's rank to use in JoSAA?
No. This is one of the most common misconceptions. You do not need to select, apply, or indicate which session produced your better rank. NTA's system automatically processes all your session scores, identifies the highest NTA score, and generates a single final rank card. When you register on josaa.nic.in with your JEE Main Application Number, the system fetches this final consolidated rank from NTA's database.
3
What if my January 2026 rank was better than my April 2026 rank?
If your January session NTA score was higher than your April session score, NTA will use the January score for your final rank. The April session score is simply ignored. Conversely, if April was better, April score is used. You benefit either way. There is no penalty for performing worse in the second session — it can only help or have no effect, never hurt your final rank.
4
Can I see both my session-wise scores and my final consolidated rank?
Yes. Your JEE Main scorecard shows your NTA score for the specific session you appeared in. After all sessions are complete and the final answer key is released, NTA issues the final rank card which shows your consolidated rank (the best session score converted to rank). The rank card is a separate document from the scorecard. Your JoSAA application will reference the rank on the final rank card.
5
Does the same best-rank rule apply to JEE Advanced and IIT seats?
No. JEE Advanced is a separate exam with a single attempt (you cannot retake it within the same year). For IIT seats, JoSAA uses your JEE Advanced CRL (Common Rank List). For NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats, JoSAA uses your JEE Main CRL. These are two separate ranks and both are relevant if you qualified JEE Advanced — your JEE Advanced rank determines IIT eligibility, while your JEE Main rank is your fallback for NIT/IIIT options.
