JoSAA 2026 ST Category Cutoff – Scheduled Tribe Opening & Closing Ranks

ST category opening and closing ranks for IITs, NITs & IIITs — based on JoSAA 2025 actual allotment data.

Understanding ST Category Cutoffs in JoSAA 2026

Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates have 7.5% seats reserved in all centrally funded technical institutions participating in JoSAA 2026. These seats have separate opening and closing ranks based on the ST category rank list — not the general CRL. For IITs, the relevant rank is the JEE Advanced ST rank; for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, it is the JEE Main ST category rank.

ST cutoffs are numerically much higher than general category cutoffs because the ST rank pool is smaller. An ST rank of 5,000 may correspond to a general CRL of 80,000–1,20,000. Always check your ST category rank on the official NTA/JEE Advanced portals.

JoSAA 2026 ST Cutoff – FAQs

Common questions about ST category cutoff ranks in JoSAA 2026

1
What is the ST category cutoff for IIT Bombay CSE in JoSAA 2026?
Based on JoSAA 2025 data, IIT Bombay CSE ST category closing rank was approximately 400–600 (JEE Advanced ST rank). ST category has a separate rank list — your JEE Advanced ST rank (not the general CRL rank) is what matters for IIT allotment. IIT Bombay CSE is the most competitive program even within ST quota. In JoSAA 2026, expect similar figures with minor variations based on the number of ST candidates qualifying.
2
How is ST rank calculated for JoSAA cutoffs?
For IITs, ST category candidates are ranked separately within the ST pool based on JEE Advanced scores. For NITs and IIITs, ST candidates have their own JEE Main category rank (ST CRL). JoSAA publishes separate opening and closing ranks for ST category in each program. The ST ranks can be much higher numerically (e.g., ST rank 3,000) compared to general rank equivalents, reflecting the smaller pool of ST candidates.
3
What is the ST cutoff for NIT Trichy CSE in JoSAA 2026?
For NIT Trichy CSE, the ST Other State category closing rank in JoSAA 2025 was approximately 3,500–5,000 (JEE Main ST rank). The Home State ST closing rank was slightly lower. Note that these are ST category ranks, not general CRL ranks. If you have a JEE Main ST rank of 5,000, you stand a reasonable chance at NIT Trichy CSE. Use our college predictor tool specifying your ST category for accurate predictions.
4
Can ST candidates get fee waiver in JoSAA 2026?
Yes. ST candidates admitted through JoSAA 2026 to IITs, NITs, and IIITs are eligible for full tuition fee waiver as per Government of India norms. The fee waiver covers the annual tuition fee (approximately Rs. 1.25 lakh per year at IITs for SC/ST students). Hostel, mess, and other charges are separate. At NITs, similar provisions apply under central government scholarship schemes for SC/ST students.
5
How many seats are reserved for ST in IITs and NITs?
As per Government of India reservation policy, 7.5% of seats in centrally funded technical institutions (IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) are reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates. In addition to the 7.5% ST seats in the general pool, IITs also have supernumerary female seats within the ST category. The actual number varies per institution — a typical IIT CSE branch with 60 seats would have approximately 4–5 ST seats.
