JoSAA Spot Round vs CSAB 2026 – Key Differences Explained

JoSAA spot round was discontinued in 2022. Here's everything about what happens after JoSAA Round 5 and how CSAB fills the gap.

No JoSAA Spot Round in 2026

JoSAA officially discontinued its spot round from 2022 onwards. Candidates waiting for a "JoSAA spot round" will wait in vain — the mechanism no longer exists. All post-Round-5 vacancies at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs are now handled exclusively by CSAB.

What Was the JoSAA Spot Round?

Before 2022, JoSAA conducted an additional allotment round after its regular rounds, called the "Spot Round." In this round, candidates could walk in or register online for remaining vacant seats across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. The spot round was primarily targeted at candidates who did not get a seat during the main JoSAA rounds, or those willing to accept less preferred choices.

Starting from JoSAA 2022, the spot round was permanently discontinued. The rationale was to streamline the process and avoid misuse. The responsibility for filling post-JoSAA vacancies (at NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) was transferred entirely to CSAB.

Timeline Context

1

2

Register for CSAB (Opens July 28)

JoSAA Spot Round vs CSAB – FAQs

Common questions about spot rounds and CSAB after JoSAA Round 5

1
Is there a JoSAA spot round in 2026?
No. JoSAA discontinued its spot round from 2022 onwards. There is no JoSAA spot round in 2026. After JoSAA Round 5, any unfilled seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs go to CSAB for Special Rounds. IIT seats that remain vacant are NOT offered through any further round and are typically lapsed.
2
What happens to IIT seats after JoSAA Round 5?
Vacant IIT seats after JoSAA Round 5 are generally not filled through any additional round. CSAB only handles NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats — it does not have access to IIT seats. This is why securing a JoSAA allotment within Round 5 is critical for IIT aspirants.
3
When does CSAB 2026 open after JoSAA Round 5?
CSAB 2026 registration and vacancy display ran July 28 to August 3, 2026 — after JoSAA Round 5 results (July 16, 2026) and the NIT+ partial fee payment/category restoration window (July 22–24, 2026). The SR1 result was declared August 6 and the SR2 result was also declared, completing CSAB 2026's two special rounds. You must register separately on csab.nic.in — your JoSAA registration does not automatically enroll you in CSAB.
4
Do I need to pay again for CSAB after JoSAA?
Yes. CSAB requires a separate registration and seat acceptance fee. If you already have a JoSAA seat and wish to participate in CSAB for an upgrade, you must register for CSAB and pay its processing fee separately. Seat acceptance fees differ between JoSAA and CSAB.
5
Can I participate in CSAB if I didn't get any seat in JoSAA?
Yes. CSAB is open to all eligible candidates — both those who got a JoSAA seat (and want an upgrade) and those who didn't get any seat in JoSAA. This is the primary purpose of CSAB: to fill remaining NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats after JoSAA and give unallocated candidates another chance.
