Not Allotted in JoSAA 2026 Round 2?

Don't Panic · 3 Rounds Remain · No Action Needed · CSAB as Backup

JoSAA 2026 counselling has concluded

All 5 rounds are complete — the process ended with the Round 5 (Final) result on July 16, 2026. If you were not allotted a seat by the end of Round 2 (or any round) and remain unallotted, JoSAA is no longer the active process. The next relevant step is CSAB special rounds, with registration open now (July 28 – August 3, 2026) on csab.nic.in, using the same JEE Main rank.

This page describes what applied during Round 2 of JoSAA 2026

Not being allotted in Round 2 was normal and expected for 15–25% of active candidates at that stage. Rounds 3, 4, and 5 (July 6, July 10, July 16) followed automatically. All rounds are now complete.

Why Did Round 2 Not Allot You a Seat?

JoSAA Round 2 allots seats in two ways: to Float candidates upgrading from Round 1, and to previously unallotted candidates whose rank now matches newly vacated seats. If you were not allotted, one or more of these reasons applies:

Your rank does not yet match any vacated seat

Round 2 creates vacancies only when Round 1 Float candidates get upgraded and release old seats. The seats that opened in Round 2 may still close at ranks better than yours. As more candidates Freeze in Rounds 3–5, fewer candidates are competing in the Float pool and more seats cascade down to your rank range.

Your choice list is concentrated in high-demand programs

If all your choices are programs like NIT Trichy CSE, NIT Surathkal CSE, or older IIT branches, and your rank is not competitive enough for those programs, no match is possible. Programs at the top-tier close with very little relaxation across rounds — they are effectively locked by Round 1.

Category and quota mismatches

Home-State Quota (HS) seats at NITs are reserved for home-state candidates. If you are from a different state, you only compete for Other-State (OS) seats which can have significantly higher closing ranks. Category reservation seats (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS) also have separate ranks — verify your category rank on the JEE portal.

Immediate Steps After Round 2 Non-Allotment

1

Log In and Verify Your Status

Visit josaa.nic.in and confirm your status is 'Not Allotted' — not 'Cancelled' or 'Withdrawn.' A 'Not Allotted' status means the algorithm found no match in Round 2; you automatically remain in the process. Any other status requires immediate follow-up with the JoSAA helpdesk (011-40759000).

2

Do Not Withdraw

The withdrawal button is the most dangerous option on the portal for unallotted candidates. Withdrawal permanently removes you from all future rounds — and is irreversible. You forfeit Rounds 3, 4, and 5. Only withdraw if you have a 100% confirmed superior alternative admission.

3

Review Your Choices Realistically (Read-Only)

You cannot edit your choice list, but you can view it. Compare Round 2 closing ranks (published on josaa.nic.in after Round 2) to your rank for each choice. This tells you which programs are within reach and which are out of range. If many of your top-50 choices have closing ranks 20%+ better than yours, adjust your expectations — Rounds 3–5 may open the tail-end choices.

4

Register for State Counselling in Parallel

State counselling boards (MHT-CET CAP for Maharashtra, KCET for Karnataka, TS-EAMCET for Telangana, etc.) run simultaneously with JoSAA. Register on the relevant state board portal now — most have their own deadlines running in parallel. Participating in both does not hurt your JoSAA eligibility.

5

Prepare Financially for Rapid Response

When you receive an allotment in Round 3, 4, or 5, you have only approximately 2 days to pay the seat acceptance fee: ₹35,000 (General/OBC-NCL/EWS) or ₹15,000 (SC/ST/PwD). Ensure your bank/UPI is ready for an immediate transfer the moment results come out.

The 3 Rounds Still Ahead

Based on JoSAA historical data, approximately 15–25% of active candidates who are unallotted after Round 2 receive their first allotment in Rounds 3–5. Here is what to expect:

Round 3

July 6, 2026

Large movement as Round 2 Float candidates upgrade. Many mid-rank candidates receive first allotments here.

Action: Log in to josaa.nic.in and check your result on July 6.

Round 4

July 10, 2026

Continued upgrades, though movement is slower. Allotments to candidates targeting older NITs or IIIT programs at relaxed ranks.

Action: Check result. Pay fee within 2 days if allotted. Respond with Freeze/Float.

Round 5 (Final)

July 16, 2026

Last JoSAA allotment round. Tail-end seats and GFTI vacancies often go to candidates who were not allotted earlier.

Action: Final round result. If allotted, pay fee promptly. If still not allotted, proceed to CSAB.

Backup Options to Explore in Parallel

Running backup options costs little and reduces risk. These do not interfere with your JoSAA participation:

CSAB Special Rounds 2026

Post-JoSAA

CSAB runs after JoSAA Round 5 for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats that remain vacant. Registration ran July 28–August 3, 2026 on csab.nic.in, and CSAB 2026 counselling has now concluded (SR2 result declared August 12). Uses the same JEE Main rank — no additional exam. Closing ranks in CSAB are often more relaxed than JoSAA Round 5 due to a smaller candidate pool.

State Counselling Boards

Running Now in Parallel

Maharashtra (MHT-CET CAP), Karnataka (KCET), Telangana (TS-EAMCET), Tamil Nadu (TNEA), Rajasthan, UP, Delhi (JAC Delhi) all run separate counselling simultaneously with JoSAA. Participating in state counselling does not affect JoSAA eligibility. Check each state board's registration deadline immediately.

BITSAT / VITEEE / SRM / Manipal

Private Universities

If you appeared for private engineering entrance exams, check your BITSAT/VITEEE/SRMJEEE/MET scores and application status. Top private institutes like BITS Pilani, VIT Vellore, SRM, and Manipal have strong placements and can be viable alternatives. Most conclude counselling before August.

Avoid These Mistakes After Round 2 Non-Allotment

  • Withdrawing from JoSAA: The single most consequential mistake you can make right now. Withdrawal is permanent and forfeits Rounds 3, 4, and 5.
  • Paying large advance fees to private colleges before Round 5 (July 16): Lock in a backup option if needed, but avoid irrecoverable deposits until JoSAA concludes.
  • Assuming Rounds 3–5 won't open for your rank: Many candidates in the 15,000–80,000 range see first allotments in late rounds, especially for NIT and GFTI programs.
  • Missing the fee deadline after a later-round allotment: When you receive a seat in Rounds 3–5, you have only ~2 days to pay. Be financially prepared.

JoSAA 2026 Round 2 Not Allotted – FAQs

Common questions when you receive no seat in JoSAA Round 2

1
Not allotted in both Round 1 and Round 2 — is there still hope?
Yes. Rounds 3, 4, and 5 continue on July 6, July 10, and July 16 respectively. Candidates in the 15,000–80,000 rank range who target NIT/IIIT/GFTI programs often receive their first allotments in Rounds 3–5 as Float candidates at better seats vacate their Round 1 or 2 positions. Staying in the system costs nothing. The only way to lose your chance is by withdrawing.
2
Do I need to do anything on the JoSAA portal if I was not allotted in Round 2?
No active action is required. The system automatically keeps you in the pool for subsequent rounds. However, do log in to josaa.nic.in and verify your status shows 'Not Allotted' — not 'Cancelled' or 'Withdrawn.' A cancelled or withdrawn status would require immediate follow-up with the JoSAA helpdesk.
3
Why was I not allotted in Round 2 even though I had 80+ choices?
Having many choices does not guarantee allotment — the algorithm assigns seats strictly by rank against available vacancies. If your rank is not competitive enough for any of your 80 choices based on current closing ranks, you receive no allotment. Round 2 vacancies are created only when Round 1 Float candidates get upgraded and release their old seats. If the seats that opened in Round 2 are still above your rank, you wait for Round 3 where more seats cascade down.
4
Can I add more choices to my list after Round 2?
No. The choice filling window permanently closed before Round 1 results. Your choice list is locked for all 5 rounds. This is why adding 100–150 choices across all realistic tiers during the initial window is critical — you cannot expand your list later.
5
What is CSAB and when does it open as a backup?
CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) runs special rounds after JoSAA Round 5 concludes for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats that remain vacant. It uses the same JEE Main rank list — no additional exam required. Registration ran July 28–August 3, 2026 on csab.nic.in, and CSAB 2026 counselling has now concluded (SR2 result declared August 12). Closing ranks in CSAB special rounds are often more relaxed than JoSAA Round 5 because the candidate pool is smaller.
