Can I Change from Freeze to Float After Submitting?
Yes — until the response window closes. Understand the Freeze / Float / Slide options, how to change your selection, and why waiting to finalize is smart strategy.
Yes — And Here Is How Long You Have
You can change your Freeze/Float/Slide selection as many times as you want until the response window closes for each round — typically 24–48 hours after allotment results are announced. The last selection before the deadline counts.
JoSAA's system is designed to allow candidates to deliberate and change their mind during the response window. This is intentional — the 24–48 hour window is meant for you to discuss with family, evaluate your options, and make a considered decision. You are not locked in the moment you click Save.
However, once the response window closes, your selection is final for that round. If you accidentally selected Freeze and the window closed, you will not participate in the next upgrade round. This is an irreversible outcome within that round — so don't finalise too early, but also don't leave it until the last minute when technical issues could prevent you from saving.
Freeze vs Float vs Slide: Full Explanation
Freeze
What it means: I am completely satisfied with my current allotment. Stop trying to upgrade me. I will proceed to physical reporting.
When to use: When you are happy with your current college and branch and don't want to risk any change.
Caution: Once the response window closes with Freeze selected, you are out of upgrade rounds for all subsequent rounds.
Float
What it means: I want an upgrade. Keep my current seat as fallback, but try to give me any higher-ranked choice from my list.
When to use: When your current allotment is NOT your top choice and you want any possible improvement — even if that means a different institute.
Caution: Float can result in being upgraded to a different institute/city. If you only want a branch upgrade within your current institute, use Slide instead.
Slide
What it means: I want a better branch but ONLY within my current institute. Do not move me to another college.
When to use: When you are happy with the institute (location, reputation) but would prefer a different branch within the same campus.
Caution: Slide will not give you a better college — only a better branch at the same college. If the same institute doesn't have your preferred branch, Slide has no effect.

Why You Should NOT Finalise Your Response Too Early
It is a common mistake to click Freeze immediately after viewing the allotment result, often out of anxiety or excitement. Here is why waiting and deliberating during the full response window is the better approach:
- Early Freeze = missed opportunity. Round 2 has the highest upgrade probability (~30–40%). If you freeze after Round 1, you miss this chance entirely.
- Take time to evaluate. Once you see the allotment, check the opening/closing ranks for your higher-preference choices. If those choices are within reach, Float is the logical choice.
- The response window exists for a reason. JoSAA gives you 24–48 hours intentionally. Use this time to research your allotted college, check if your higher choices are realistic, and consult with mentors or seniors.
- But don't wait until the last second. Technical glitches, slow internet, or power outages right before the deadline can prevent you from saving your selection. Submit your final choice at least 2–3 hours before the deadline closes.
