JEE Mains College Predictor for Female Supernumerary Seats 2026

Female supernumerary seats at IITs via JoSAA allow female candidates to access top IIT programs at much lower JEE ranks. Complete guide for 2026.

Female Supernumerary Seats — What You Need to Know

IITs introduced female supernumerary seats starting 2018 to address historically low female enrollment (historically ~8–10% female). By 2026, the target is 20% female enrollment. Supernumerary seats are additional seats created above the sanctioned intake — so existing male candidates are not displaced. In JoSAA 2026, female candidates appear in two seat pools: Gender-Neutral (GN) pool (competed with all genders) and Female-only pool (competed only among female candidates).

This means female candidates have two chances to get each IIT program: once in the GN pool and once in the Female pool. Female pool cutoffs are significantly higher rank numbers (i.e., more accessible). A female candidate with JEE rank 6,000 might access IIT Bombay CSE through the Female pool, whereas the GN pool cutoff for IIT Bombay CSE is approximately rank 1,500.

IIT Female Pool CSE Cutoffs (JoSAA 2025 Data, Approximate)

How to Use College Predictor for Female Supernumerary Seats

When using our college predictor as a female candidate: (1) Select gender as "Female" in the filter options. (2) Enter your JEE Main CRL rank for NIT/IIIT predictions or JEE Advanced CRL rank for IIT predictions. (3) The predictor will show both GN pool and Female pool options for IITs. (4) For JoSAA choice filling, always fill Female pool choices for IITs before GN pool choices for the same programs.

Key strategy: Female candidates with JEE Advanced ranks 5,000–15,000 should focus heavily on IIT Female pool options, as these provide access to IIT CSE/ECE programs that would otherwise be inaccessible. Many female candidates with rank 8,000 have gotten IIT Bombay ECE or IIT Delhi Math-Computing through the Female pool.

Female Supernumerary Seats – FAQs

Common questions about female supernumerary seats in JoSAA 2026

1
What are female supernumerary seats in IITs and NITs?
Female supernumerary seats are additional seats created by IITs (under JoSAA) specifically to increase female enrollment. These are not carved out of existing seats — they are extra seats added above the sanctioned intake. IITs started this initiative to boost female representation (target: 20% female enrollment by 2026). These seats are only for female candidates and have separate cutoff ranks. NITs do not have a formal supernumerary system — they use standard reservation quotas for female students.
2
How do IIT supernumerary female seats appear in JoSAA?
In JoSAA, female supernumerary seats appear as a separate seat pool — typically labeled 'Female' or 'Gender-neutral' in the choice filling interface. When filling choices, female candidates should select both the Gender-neutral (GN) pool and Female pool for each IIT program. The Female pool has lower cutoffs since it is competed only among female candidates. A female candidate may get the same IIT program through the Female pool at a higher rank (better access) than the GN pool.
3
What are the female supernumerary seat cutoffs at top IITs?
Female supernumerary seats at IITs have significantly lower cutoffs. For IIT Bombay CSE (Female), the 2025 closing rank was approximately 4,500–6,000 CRL (compared to ~1,500 for GN). IIT Delhi CSE Female closed around 5,000–7,000 CRL. IIT Madras CSE Female closed around 6,000–8,000 CRL. These ranks allow female candidates with JEE rank 5,000–8,000 to access top IIT CSE programs that are otherwise inaccessible at those ranks.
4
Can female candidates use our college predictor for supernumerary seats?
Yes. Our JEE Main college predictor has a gender filter — select 'Female' to see predictions specific to female candidates. The predictor accounts for both GN pool and Female supernumerary pool at IITs, as well as standard quotas at NITs and IIITs. Female candidates often have access to better programs at their rank compared to male candidates — always filter by gender for accurate predictions. Using the predictor with the female filter can reveal IIT programs that would not appear in a general search.
5
Do NITs have female supernumerary seats like IITs?
No, NITs do not have a formal female supernumerary seat system. NITs use a standard reservation approach where seats are divided into general, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST categories. Within each category, seats are competed among all genders. Some NITs offer female hostels and other gender-inclusive facilities, but admissions follow standard JoSAA rules without separate female pools. IITs are the primary beneficiaries of the supernumerary female seat policy initiated by the Ministry of Education.
