Understanding the Marking Scheme

Each correct MCQ answer earns +4 marks. A wrong MCQ answer deducts 1 mark (negative marking). Leaving a question blank scores 0. Numerical value questions earn +4 for correct and 0 for wrong — there is no penalty for attempting numerical questions, so always attempt them.

The 5-out-of-10 rule for numerical questions means you must select 5 to answer per subject. If you answer 6 by mistake, only the first 5 are counted. Smart strategy: mark the 5 questions you are most confident about and skip the rest.

Score vs. Percentile Relation

Raw marks out of 300 are converted to NTA Score (percentile) for ranking. Approximate benchmarks: 270+ marks ≈ 99.8+ percentile, 240–270 marks ≈ 99.5–99.8 percentile, 200–240 marks ≈ 98.5–99.5 percentile, 150–200 marks ≈ 95–98.5 percentile. Exact conversion depends on the difficulty of your specific shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

More questions about JEE Main marks and paper pattern

1
Is JEE Main 2026 out of 300 or 360 marks?
JEE Main Paper 1 (BTech/BE) is out of 300 marks. There are 90 questions, each worth 4 marks = 300 total. JEE Advanced (a different exam) is out of 360 marks. Do not confuse the two. JEE Main result shows NTA Score (percentile) alongside raw marks out of 300.
2
How many questions are there in JEE Main 2026?
JEE Main Paper 1 has 90 questions in total — 30 each for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each subject has 20 MCQ questions (with negative marking) and 10 numerical value questions (no negative marking, attempt any 5 out of 10). So you answer a total of 75 questions (60 MCQ + 15 numerical).
3
What happens if I attempt more than 5 numerical questions in JEE Main?
In each subject, you can attempt any 5 out of 10 numerical questions. If you attempt more than 5, only the first 5 responses are evaluated. There is no penalty for attempting extra, but your additional responses are ignored. It is best to attempt only the 5 you are most confident about.
4
What is the maximum possible score in JEE Main 2026?
The maximum possible raw score in JEE Main Paper 1 is 300 marks (75 questions × 4 marks each: 60 MCQ + 15 numerical). Getting 300/300 is extremely rare — only a handful of candidates achieve it each year. A score of 250+ is typically in the 99.9+ percentile range.
5
Does JEE Main Paper 2 (BArch/BPlan) have the same total marks?
JEE Main Paper 2A (BArch) has 3 sections: Mathematics (100 marks), Aptitude (200 marks), and Drawing (100 marks) — total 400 marks. Paper 2B (BPlan) has Mathematics (100 marks), Aptitude (200 marks), and Planning (100 marks) — total 400 marks. These are different from Paper 1.
