What is Opening Rank?

Opening rank is the rank of the first candidate admitted to a branch at a given institute in a specific category and quota. It is the best (lowest) rank that secured a seat. Opening rank by itself is not the admission cutoff — use the closing rank to judge realistic chances.

OS Quota

Other State — 50% seats open to all states

HS Quota

Home State — 50% seats for NIT's home state candidates

AI Quota

All India — IIITs have 100% AI seats, no state quota

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JEE Main opening ranks, NIT/IIIT cutoffs, and JoSAA counselling.

1
What is opening rank in JEE Main JoSAA counselling?
Opening rank is the rank of the first candidate admitted to a particular branch at a particular institute in a given category during JoSAA counselling. It represents the best (lowest) rank that secured a seat. For example, if NIT Trichy CSE opening rank is 247, it means the candidate with rank 247 was the first to be admitted to that seat in that round.
2
What is the difference between opening rank and closing rank?
Opening rank is the rank of the first candidate admitted (best rank / lowest number), while closing rank is the rank of the last candidate admitted (highest number). For NIT Trichy CSE OS General in JoSAA 2025, opening rank was around 247 and closing rank was around 3,500. Most candidates should target the closing rank when planning their choices.
3
What is OS and HS quota in NITs?
In NITs, 50% seats are under Other State (OS) quota — open to candidates from all states — and 50% are under Home State (HS) quota — reserved for candidates who studied Class 12 from the NIT's home state. OS opening ranks are typically lower (better) than HS for most top branches. For example, NIT Trichy HS CSE has a lower opening rank than OS because more seats are competed for statewide.
4
Which NIT has the lowest opening rank for CSE?
NIT Warangal and NIT Trichy consistently have the lowest (best) opening ranks for CSE. In JoSAA 2025, NIT Warangal CSE OS General opening rank was around 201 and NIT Trichy CSE OS General was around 247. These are among the most competitive seats in the NIT system.
5
Can I use opening rank to predict my college?
Opening rank gives you a floor — if your rank is worse (higher number) than the opening rank, you definitely cannot get that branch. However, the more relevant metric is the closing rank of the last round, which tells you the actual cutoff. Use our College Predictor tool which uses closing ranks across all 6 JoSAA rounds for accurate predictions.
6
When will JEE Main 2026 opening ranks be available?
JEE Main 2026 opening ranks will be available after JoSAA 2026 counselling begins, which is expected in June 2026. Round 1 results will publish the first set of opening ranks. Final opening and closing ranks for all rounds will be available after all 6 rounds complete in July 2026. Until then, JoSAA 2025 data (shown here) is the best reference.
7
Do opening ranks vary across JoSAA rounds?
Yes. Opening ranks can vary slightly across rounds because of withdrawals and upgrades. However, Round 1 opening ranks are the most stable reference. The data shown here is based on Round 6 (final round) of JoSAA 2025, which represents the actual final admission ranks.
8
What rank do I need for IIIT Hyderabad CSE?
IIIT Hyderabad CSE is one of the most competitive seats in the non-IIT category. In JoSAA 2025, the opening rank for IIIT Hyderabad CSE (General, Gender Neutral) was approximately 452. The closing rank was around 750-800. You typically need a JEE Main rank under 1,000 to have a strong chance.
