How Many Subjects Are in JEE Main?

JEE Main Paper 1 (BTech/BE) has 3 subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each subject has 30 questions (20 MCQ + 10 Numerical) worth 100 marks = 300 total. Paper 2A (BArch) has Mathematics, Aptitude, and Drawing.

JEE Main 2026 Subject-wise Breakdown

SubjectMCQNumericalMax Marks
Physics20 (attempt all)10 (attempt any 5)100
Chemistry20 (attempt all)10 (attempt any 5)100
Mathematics20 (attempt all)10 (attempt any 5)100
Total6030 (answer 15)300

Which Subject to Focus On?

All three subjects are equally weighted at 100 marks each. However, candidate performance data shows that Mathematics is most differentiating — high scorers in JEE Main typically score 90+ in Mathematics. Chemistry is considered the most scoring (higher average marks) as it requires more memorisation than derivation. Physics requires both conceptual understanding and calculation speed.

A balanced approach is recommended: aim for at least 80+ in each subject. A weak subject can drag down your percentile significantly. Identify your weakest area early and allocate more study time to it.

JEE Main Syllabus Coverage

The JEE Main 2026 syllabus covers Class 11 and Class 12 NCERT topics. NTA announced rationalised syllabus from 2024 onwards, removing some topics that were previously part of JEE Main but removed from NCERT. Always refer to the official NTA JEE Main syllabus PDF at jeemain.nta.nic.in for the most accurate topic list.

Frequently Asked Questions

More questions about JEE Main subjects and syllabus

1
Is Biology a subject in JEE Main?
No. JEE Main Paper 1 (BTech) does not include Biology. The three subjects are Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics only. Biology is relevant for NEET (medical entrance), not JEE. Some candidates preparing for both NEET and JEE study Biology separately alongside PCM.
2
Which subject has the highest weightage in JEE Main?
All three subjects — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics — carry equal weightage of 100 marks each (30 questions × 4 marks + numerical questions up to 20 marks per subject = 100 marks per subject). Total = 300 marks. There is no subject with higher weightage; the balance is equal.
3
What topics are covered in each JEE Main subject?
Physics covers Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Optics, Modern Physics, Thermodynamics, and Waves. Chemistry covers Physical Chemistry (Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry, Kinetics), Organic Chemistry (Reactions, Named Reactions, Polymers), and Inorganic Chemistry (Periodic table, Coordination, p-block, d-block). Mathematics covers Calculus, Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, Vectors, and Statistics.
4
What subjects are in JEE Main Paper 2 (BArch)?
JEE Main Paper 2A (BArch) has three sections: Part 1 — Mathematics (20 MCQ + 10 Numerical = 100 marks), Part 2 — Aptitude Test (50 MCQ = 200 marks), Part 3 — Drawing Test (2 questions = 100 marks). Total = 400 marks. Paper 2B (BPlan) replaces Drawing with Planning section.
5
Can I skip one subject in JEE Main?
No. All three subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) are compulsory in JEE Main Paper 1. You cannot choose to skip a subject. If you leave all questions in one subject blank, you still score 0 for that section — and your overall NTA Score will be very low as subject-wise scores factor into percentile calculation.
