JEE Main 2026 Tie Breaking Rule

How NTA resolves ties when two or more students achieve identical NTA scores in JEE Main 2026.

The Four-Step Tie-Breaking Hierarchy

With approximately 14 lakh students appearing in JEE Main 2026, hundreds of candidates inevitably end up with identical NTA scores. To assign a unique rank to every student, NTA follows a four-step tie-breaking process. Each step is applied only if the previous step still results in a tie.

Step 1

Mathematics NTA Score

The student with the higher Maths percentile is ranked higher. This is the most important subject for rank differentiation.

Step 2

Physics NTA Score

If Maths percentiles are equal, Physics percentile is compared. Higher Physics percentile wins.

Step 3

Chemistry NTA Score

If both Maths and Physics are tied, Chemistry NTA score is used as the third discriminator.

Step 4

Age (Date of Birth)

If all three subject percentiles are equal, the older candidate (earlier date of birth) is given a better rank.

Practical Examples of Tie-Breaking

Consider two students, Student A and Student B, who both score an NTA score of 99.80:

CriterionStudent AStudent BWinner
Overall NTA Score99.8099.80Tied
Maths NTA Score99.9599.70A wins

In this example, Student A is ranked higher because of a better Maths NTA score, even though both have the same overall NTA score. The Physics and Chemistry comparison is not needed as the tie was already resolved at step 1.

This tie-breaking framework means that students aiming for competitive ranks should pay special attention to maximising their Maths performance, as it is the first differentiator in any rank dispute.

Impact on JoSAA Counselling

Your JEE Main rank — after tie-breaking — is what determines your JoSAA counselling eligibility and seat allotment priority. Even a difference of one rank can matter at highly competitive branches like CSE at NIT Trichy or IIIT Hyderabad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JEE Main 2026 tie-breaking rules

1
What is the first tie-breaking criterion in JEE Main 2026?
The first tie-breaking criterion is the NTA score in Mathematics. The student with the higher Maths percentile is ranked higher. If Maths percentiles are also equal, the comparison moves to Physics.
2
What if all three subject percentiles are equal between two students?
If all three subject-wise NTA scores (Maths, Physics, Chemistry) are identical for two candidates, the tie is broken by age — the older candidate (born earlier) is ranked higher. This is the final and rarely-used criterion.
3
Does tie-breaking apply to category rank lists as well?
Yes, the same tie-breaking hierarchy applies to all rank lists — CRL (Common Rank List), OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD rank lists. The order is always: Maths percentile → Physics percentile → Chemistry percentile → Age.
4
Why is Maths given priority over Physics in tie-breaking?
NTA has historically prioritized Maths as the primary discriminator because Mathematics is considered the most critical subject for engineering aptitude. This rule has been consistent across JEE Main editions and ensures a clear, subject-based ranking.
5
Can two students share the same JEE Main rank?
In theory, two students can share the same rank only if all four tie-breaking criteria are identical — same NTA score, same Maths/Physics/Chemistry percentile, and same date of birth. This is extremely rare and virtually impossible in practice given the large exam population.
