CSAB College Predictor for OBC/SC/ST/EWS

Category-wise college predictions for CSAB 2026 — tailored closing ranks for every reservation category

Why Category-Wise Prediction Matters in CSAB

A generic, category-agnostic college predictor can be misleading for reserved-category candidates because closing ranks vary dramatically across categories for the exact same institute-branch seat. A General category candidate and an OBC-NCL candidate looking at the same NIT CSE seat are, in effect, looking at two entirely different competitive pools with two entirely different closing ranks — often by a wide margin. Using a single, undifferentiated cutoff figure without adjusting for category can cause a reserved-category candidate to either underestimate their real chances (by comparing their category rank against a General cutoff) or overestimate them (by comparing a favorable category rank against the wrong category's historical data).

This matters even more in CSAB specifically, because CSAB deals with the residual seats left after JoSAA, and the category-wise dynamics of "leftover" seats can differ from the dynamics of the original seat pool. Certain categories may have proportionally more or fewer seats remaining depending on how allotment and acceptance patterns played out during JoSAA's rounds for that particular reservation category. A category-wise predictor accounts for this by applying category-specific historical CSAB closing rank data rather than a blended, category-blind figure.

Understanding Category Ranks in CSAB

JEE Main 2026 generates multiple ranks for each candidate: a Common Rank List (CRL) rank and separate category ranks for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and EWS candidates. In CSAB 2026:

  • General seats use CRL rank exclusively.
  • OBC-NCL seats use OBC-NCL category rank. Candidates with OBC-NCL category rank below the closing rank for OBC-NCL seats qualify, even if their CRL rank is much higher.
  • SC/ST seats use SC/ST category rank respectively.
  • EWS seats use EWS rank. EWS closing ranks are close to general CRL ranks since EWS candidates technically fall in the unreserved pool.

Our category-wise predictor automatically selects the correct rank type based on your category selection and compares it against the appropriate CSAB 2025 closing ranks for that category.

Category-Wise Strategy for CSAB 2026

OBC-NCL Strategy

Check both CRL and OBC category rank. Use home state quota for NIT in your state. Fill 15+ choices from top to bottom. OBC-NCL candidates often get CSE at mid-tier NITs even with CRL rank above 30,000.

SC Strategy

SC candidates have significantly relaxed cutoffs. CSE at NITs like Silchar, Surathkal, or Allahabad is achievable for SC candidates with CRL rank up to 60,000–80,000. Use the SC category predictor specifically.

ST Strategy

ST seats are fewer but cutoffs are very lenient. Even top NITs occasionally have ST seats in CSAB if they went unfilled in JoSAA. Check NEUT round as well if you are from a North East state.

EWS Strategy

EWS closing ranks are typically 10–30% higher than general CRL closing ranks for the same seat. Ensure your income certificate is valid (issued within 1 year) before CSAB registration.

Home State vs Other State Category Cutoffs

Beyond category reservation, NITs additionally split seats by home state and other state quota — roughly half of an NIT's seats are reserved for candidates who completed their Class 12 schooling in that state, with the remaining half open to candidates from anywhere in the country. This quota system operates independently within each reservation category, meaning an OBC-NCL candidate from an NIT's home state competes in a smaller, generally less competitive OBC-NCL home-state pool, while an OBC-NCL candidate from outside that state competes in the OBC-NCL other-state pool. The result is that a single institute-branch-category combination can actually have up to four distinct closing ranks once you factor in home state and other state splits alongside category.

When using any category-wise predictor, always double-check whether the displayed cutoff reflects your specific state relationship to the institute in question, since conflating home-state and other-state figures for your category is one of the more common sources of prediction error among first-time CSAB applicants.

It also helps to remember that home state status is generally determined by where you completed Class 11 and 12, not by your permanent address or your parents' domicile — so candidates who moved states for schooling should verify carefully which NITs count as their home state institute before relying on home-state cutoff figures in their planning. This distinction can meaningfully change your predicted options, so it is worth confirming early rather than assuming based on your family's home address.

Frequently Asked Questions – CSAB Category-Wise Predictor

Common questions about category-wise CSAB 2026 college prediction

1
What is the seat reservation breakdown in CSAB 2026?
CSAB 2026 follows the same Central government reservation policy as JoSAA: OBC-NCL = 27% seats, SC = 15% seats, ST = 7.5% seats, EWS = 10% seats, General = 40.5% seats. Additionally, 5% horizontal reservation applies for PwD candidates across all categories. Female supernumerary seats (typically 20%) are available at NITs.
2
What rank do OBC-NCL candidates need for NIT CSE in CSAB 2026?
For OBC-NCL candidates, CSAB 2025 closing ranks for NIT CSE ranged from 12,000–18,000 (mid-tier NITs like Silchar, Agartala other state) to 50,000+ (newer NITs). OBC category rank, not CRL rank, is used for OBC seats. Typically, OBC closing rank is about 3–4x higher than the CRL closing rank for the same seat.
3
How does CSAB work for SC/ST candidates?
SC and ST candidates compete in their respective reserved category pools. CSAB 2025 closing ranks for SC candidates were typically 3–5x higher than general CRL ranks. SC/ST candidates also pay lower seat acceptance fees (₹15,000 vs ₹30,000) and get a full tuition fee waiver at IITs and most NITs. SC candidates with CRL rank up to 80,000 often have good NIT CSE options in CSAB.
4
Are EWS seats available in CSAB 2026?
Yes. EWS (Economically Weaker Section) seats (10% of total) are available in CSAB 2026 for General category candidates with family annual income below ₹8 lakh and who do not belong to OBC/SC/ST. EWS closing ranks in CSAB 2025 were close to General CRL closing ranks, often 1.1–1.3x higher. An income certificate from a competent authority is mandatory.
5
Can OBC-NCL candidates from non-creamy layer get home state advantage in CSAB?
Yes. The home state vs. other state quota applies to all categories including OBC-NCL. OBC-NCL home state candidates compete within the OBC-NCL home state quota seats (typically 13.5% of total home state seats at NITs). An OBC-NCL candidate from the same state as an NIT has a significant rank advantage over other-state OBC-NCL candidates.
