CSAB 2027 SR1 vs SR2 — Expected Differences

A side-by-side look at how SR1 and SR2 are expected to differ in 2027, based on the stable mechanism CSAB has used for years.

Disclaimer: CSAB 2027 has no official dates yet. Every row in the comparison below reflects the expected pattern based on 2026 and earlier cycles, not a confirmed 2027 schedule.

SR1 vs SR2 — Expected Comparison Table

Registration requiredYes — once, at the start of the CSAB 2027 cycle (expected)No — reuses the SR1 registration and locked list (expected)
Choice listFilled and locked once before SR1 (expected)Same list as SR1, no edits (expected)
Seat pool sizeLarger — full post-JoSAA vacancy pool (expected)Smaller net pool, partly refilled by non-joiners (expected)
Who is consideredAll registered candidates with a locked choice list (expected)Floated or unallotted SR1 candidates only (expected)
Is it the final round? No — SR2 follows (expected)Likely yes, based on every recent cycle (expected, not confirmed)
Fee structureBased on 2026 pattern: ~₹30,000 (Gen/EWS/OBC) / ~₹15,000 (SC/ST/PwD)Same fee structure expected, no change

Why This Distinction Matters for Planning

Even without confirmed 2027 dates, the underlying logic of CSAB's two-round design is worth understanding well in advance. SR1 and SR2 are not independent attempts — they run off one locked choice list. This means the quality of your SR1 outcome is likely to be far more consequential than any single JoSAA round, because SR2 can only reshuffle you within preferences already locked.

Institute-tier behavior has also been consistent across years: older, high-demand NITs tend to be close to fully subscribed by the end of SR1, while GFTIs and newer IIITs show the largest SR1-to-SR2 movement. This pattern is structural rather than year-specific, so it's reasonable to expect it again in 2027.

CSAB 2027 SR1 vs SR2 – FAQs

Common questions comparing CSAB 2027 Special Round 1 and Special Round 2

1
What is the main difference expected between CSAB 2027 SR1 and SR2?
Based on the stable pattern used in 2026 and earlier years, SR1 is the first allotment run against your locked choice list, and SR2 runs immediately after against a smaller, adjusted seat pool shaped by SR1 freezes and non-joiners. Both are expected to use the same single locked choice list — no re-registration or re-filling of choices between the two rounds.
2
Will the choice list need to be refilled between SR1 and SR2 in 2027?
Based on the consistent CSAB design used every year, no — one choice list, locked once before SR1, is reused for SR2. This structural feature is unlikely to change for 2027, though you should always confirm against the specific 2027 brochure once released.
3
Is CSAB 2027 SR2 expected to be the final round?
Based on the pattern in all recent cycles, yes — SR2 is expected to be the last centralized CSAB round, with no SR3 on csab.nic.in. After SR2, any further seat filling would likely shift to independent institute-level spot rounds, which are not part of CSAB's coordinated process.
4
Does seat pool size change between SR1 and SR2?
Based on the historical pattern, yes, in both directions — the pool shrinks from SR1 freezes and reporting, and can partly grow from SR1 allottees who don't pay the fee or report in time. The net effect varies by institute, with GFTIs and newer IIITs typically showing the biggest movement.
5
Who is expected to be eligible for SR2?
Based on the stable rule, candidates who Floated after SR1 or remained unallotted are automatically carried into SR2; those who Froze in SR1 are excluded from SR2 entirely. This eligibility logic is expected to carry over unchanged to 2027.
6
Which round should matter more to my CSAB 2027 strategy — SR1 or SR2?
Based on the consistent pattern, treat SR1 as the more consequential round, since your choice list is locked before SR1 runs and SR2 can only reshuffle you within those same preferences. Plan your choice list as if SR1 is close to your final opportunity, with SR2 as a bonus upgrade window.
