CSAB 2027 SR1 Overview

A clear explanation of what CSAB Special Round 1 involves, based on the stable mechanism used every year.

Disclaimer: CSAB 2027 SR1 has no official date yet. This overview describes the stable SR1 mechanism used in 2026 and earlier years — treat it as expected behavior, not a confirmed 2027 schedule.

What SR1 Does

CSAB Special Round 1 is the first allotment run against the registered and locked choice lists of all eligible CSAB candidates. It evaluates every candidate against the seat matrix of NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs that remained vacant once JoSAA's rounds concluded. This structure has remained unchanged for years and is expected to carry over to the 2027 cycle, even though no 2027 date exists yet.

Importantly, SR1 does not require a fresh registration — candidates who completed the main CSAB registration and locked a choice list are automatically evaluated. This single-registration design (rather than per-round registration) is one of CSAB's most consistent structural features across cycles.

SR1 Registration Steps (Based on the Stable Process)

1

Register on csab.nic.in

Using your JEE Main application number and password/date of birth, within the registration window once announced.

2

Pay the registration fee

A fee distinct from the later seat acceptance fee, as has been the pattern in past cycles.

3

Fill and lock your choice list

Covering NIT, IIIT, and GFTI institute-branch-quota combinations you would accept.

4

Check SR1 allotment result

Published after the registration and locking window closes.

5

Freeze or Float

Freeze to accept the seat as final, or Float to remain eligible for SR2 while holding the SR1 seat as fallback.

* This sequence reflects the stable registration-to-allotment process used in recent CSAB cycles. 2027 dates and exact steps will be confirmed in the official brochure.

Expected SR1 Outcomes

  • Allotted a seat → decide between Freeze (lock it, exit further rounds) or Float (keep it as fallback, remain eligible for SR2)
  • Not allotted → automatically carried forward into SR2 evaluation without any extra action

These outcomes reflect the historical pattern. Confirm the exact 2027 rule once CSAB's brochure is released.

CSAB 2027 SR1 – FAQs

Common questions about CSAB 2027 Special Round 1

1
What is CSAB SR1, in simple terms?
SR1 (Special Round 1) is the first centralized allotment round CSAB runs after candidates register and lock their choice list. It allots seats that remain vacant in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs after JoSAA's final round. This basic definition has stayed consistent for years and is expected to apply to CSAB 2027 as well.
2
Has CSAB 2027 SR1 been scheduled?
No. As of October 2026, there is no official CSAB 2027 schedule, since JEE Main 2027, JEE Advanced 2027, and JoSAA 2027 have not been conducted yet. SR1 for 2027 will only be scheduled once those earlier stages conclude.
3
Do I need to register separately for SR1?
Based on the pattern used every year, no — a single CSAB registration and locked choice list covers both SR1 and any subsequent SR2. There is no SR1-specific registration separate from the main CSAB registration. The same mechanism is expected for 2027.
4
What happens if I don't get a seat in SR1?
Historically, candidates who remain unallotted in SR1 are automatically carried forward and re-evaluated in SR2 without needing to take any extra action. This automatic carry-forward has been stable for years and is expected to continue in 2027.
5
How is SR1 different from SR2?
SR1 runs first against the full post-JoSAA vacancy pool, while SR2 runs against a smaller, adjusted pool shaped by SR1 freezes and non-joiners. See our dedicated comparison for the full breakdown of how these two rounds differ.
6
What documents are typically needed for CSAB SR1 registration?
Based on the consistent pattern across past cycles, candidates have needed their JEE Main application number and password/date of birth to register, along with documents such as Class 10 and 12 certificates, category certificate (if applicable), JEE Main scorecard, and photo ID for later verification. The exact document checklist is published in CSAB's official brochure each year — treat this list as a general guide to prepare in advance.
7
Is there a fee to register or participate in CSAB SR1?
Historically, CSAB has charged a registration fee (distinct from the later seat acceptance fee) at the time of registering for the special rounds, with amounts that have stayed relatively stable across recent cycles. The exact 2027 registration fee amount is not yet known and will be confirmed in the official CSAB 2027 notification — always check the current fee structure before completing payment.
8
Which institutes participate in CSAB SR1?
CSAB SR1 has consistently covered vacant seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) that remain unfilled after JoSAA's final round — it does not cover IIT seats, since IITs are allotted exclusively through JoSAA. This institute coverage has been stable for years and is expected to apply to CSAB 2027 as well.
9
Can I withdraw after accepting a seat in CSAB SR1?
Based on the pattern followed in past cycles, candidates have generally been allowed to withdraw from CSAB after accepting a seat, within a specified withdrawal window and often subject to a partial or full forfeiture of fees depending on the stage of withdrawal. The exact withdrawal rules and any applicable refund amounts for 2027 will be specified in that year's official CSAB brochure — review it carefully before deciding to withdraw.
