Common Reasons Why CSAB Refunds Fail & How to Fix Them

1. Merged Bank IFSC Code Errors

Several national banks (e.g. Allahabad Bank, Syndicate Bank, Andhra Bank) merged into larger banks with new IFSC codes. If you provided an obsolete IFSC, the transfer will bounce.

2. Dormant or Inactive Bank Account

If no transactions were made in your student savings account over the past 12 months, banks freeze incoming credits until re-KYC is submitted.

3. Providing an NRE, Minor, or Digital Wallet Account

Airtel Payments Bank, Paytm Payments Bank, or NRI/NRE accounts frequently have credit limits or reject central PFMS treasury transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common queries regarding tracking CSAB fee refunds

1
Where can I check my CSAB 2026 fee refund status?
You can check your CSAB refund status in two places: (1) Directly on the CSAB portal (csab.nic.in) by logging into your Candidate Dashboard and navigating to 'Fee Payment Details' or 'Refund Status', where your refund approval status and Bank UTR/Transaction Reference number will be displayed. (2) On the Central Government PFMS portal (pfms.nic.in) under 'Know Your Payments' using your registered bank account number.
2
What is the UTR number in CSAB refund status?
A UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) is a 16-to-22 character alphanumeric code generated by the Reserve Bank of India / NEFT / RTGS banking network when CSAB disburses your refund. If your CSAB dashboard shows a UTR number, it confirms that CSAB has already dispatched the funds to your bank. You can quote this UTR at your bank branch to locate the incoming credit.
3
How long does it take for money to credit after status shows 'Processed'?
Once CSAB updates the refund status to 'Processed' or 'Initiated' and generates a UTR, the funds typically credit to your bank account within 2 to 4 working days, depending on inter-bank clearing cycles.
4
Why has my CSAB refund failed or not credited?
The four most common reasons for refund failure are: (1) Inactive or dormant bank account, (2) Incorrect IFSC code due to recent public sector bank mergers, (3) Account name mismatch between the JEE candidate and the account holder, or (4) Providing an NRE, wallet, or loan account that rejects incoming NEFT/PFMS government credits.
5
What should I do if my CSAB refund is delayed past October 2026?
If you haven't received your refund by late October 2026: (1) Log in to csab.nic.in and verify whether a bank account correction link is open, (2) Submit an official ticket in the CSAB Candidate Grievance Redressal portal with your JEE Main application number and bank passbook/cancelled cheque copy, or (3) Email the CSAB Central Organizing Helpdesk with your transaction ID and details.
